Packard Bell EasyNote MB88-P-003 - Problems with screen and loading Windows

I got this problem about a month ago, everywhere is trying to charge me £200+ to get it fixed, when I paid £700 for this laptop less than 18 months ago. Below is a pic:

That's what happens when it boots, and everything is split into 8 screens like that. Windows won't boot at all, I've reformatted it, still doesn't work.Windows won't boot in safe mode.

I'm lead to believe it's a problem with the graphics card chip, but I don't know. Any suggesstions on what the problem is and how I could fix it?

This is the laptop: http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,...9294448,00.htm

It first happened when I was playing Unreal Tournament 3, and the laptop froze. When I turned it off and back on, this happened. I played around with the motherboard, and it was working fine. Then after loading up Counter-Strike Source, it froze again. This time, I can't get it working.

You mentioned "reformat it", meaning you were able to re-install Windows? If so, any issues (bad screen presentation as stated) during the boot up of the installation CD and the installation?

cheers ...

Yes, I managed to get onto the 'Packard Bell Recovery' thing by pressing F8 before it tried booting windows and I managed to reinstall Windows. But during the installation, the screen was identical to what you can see above.

Before we jump on a bad gpu, try plug in an external monitor and see if the problem is the same.

I tried that with 1 monitor, didn't work. I'm going to try it with my TV when I find the VGA cable.

But windows refusing to load surely can't link to it?

I did install 2 new memory sticks earlier this year. Maybe I should try putting the old ones back in?

Not a bad idea, also try just use one stick at a time.

cheers ...

Tried 3 different sticks of memory, different times, different slots. Seems like it's not a memory problem.

I took a picture of the back with the 2 panels off, which are quite easy to unscrew. I thought it could help.

What happens if we remove the LCD from the main board - remove the connector - and use the notebook with just an external monitor plugged in? Would it freezes?

cheers ...
