Don,
Yeah I thought this thing might pack some heat. Considering the hardware in this baby, this was to be expected. However I also am a Fan (lol) of keeping things cool, so I wonder if they make 20'' laptop coolers? Also, since SLI seems to not be working in Vista... yet... , it goes to follow this thing will heat up even more once the new drivers come out. Have you checked out how hot your processor is getting yet? Overall how are you liking your new system? was it worth the wait? |

Hey Perthos,
I have looked at some cooling pads and the heat generated by the computer. All-in-all the computer does not get that hot. In fact, since I ordered a barebones system that allowed me to choose my own components I was able to put some high density AS5 compound on both the processor and the GPU, which appears to be keeping everything sufficiently cool. However, I have noticed two key problems. The heatsink assembly for the processor has two fans and a strange looking copper heatsink that attaches directly to the heatpipes. This copper portion that actually touches the processor heat transfer is not well designed. In it there are two notches that indicate where the processor should be, but they are turned 90 degrees. This means that there are two substantial gaps between the processor and the heatsink, which must be filled to allow for more efficient heat transfer. With that said, when the processor has been on for an hour or so it begins idling between 55-58c. I don't believe that this is normal. I've never had a processor idle at such high temps. It makes me a little nervous and I wil probably have to find some other way- other than notebook coolers- to keep it cool. Let me know if your processor runs that hot and how everything else goes. el Don (it's a nickname, not my real name) |

Seeing a full 4GiB
Has anyone seen a Hypersonic AX20 (or a Clevo M590KE, Sager NP5960 etc) with 4GiB of RAM that can actually be detected by the BIOS?
I'm hoping the quote below indicates that Clevo have a fix for the "2.8GiB" limit some machines are showing ... Quote:
Thanks for any info - B. |

Just out of curosity baked, why would you need 4 GB of RAM?

XP, with a number of large-ish applications running needs about 1GiB (and probably more - the instance I'm using right now is thrashing its brains out). Vista is reportedly much heavier - let's say 1 to 1.5, but I'm still to test this. So with Windows running simultaneously with a couple of instances of Linux - one hosting and the other doing the real work (including some memory hog applications and servers) - we're running out of space in 2GiB. Now, the next step up is 4GiB, which should be straightforward with a 64bit OS. This issue is that I'm not totally happy with the concept of paying exorbitant prices for 4GiB of RAM (which I specifically confirmed with my vendor was available, a situtation which they tell me they specifically confirmed with their supplier) only to have 2.8 accessible when it comes time to take delivery. Of course I could switch the memory hog, suspend Windows when it's not being used and resume when necessary, but that's only slightly better than dual-boot, and there is still something rather frustrating about having one third of the available (expensive) RAM inaccessible. So my hope, and suspicion, is that there is a hardware bug in some versions of this machine, and that Clevo has a fix, probably through BIOS upgrades (to hoist the relevant RAM) and maybe the addition of a track (or tracks) to the address bus, which would explain the new version of the motherboard mentioned in a previous post. I expect that Clevo would would see this as a problem that they would fix as quickly as possible, to maintain reputation and sales, as 2GiB memory sticks become available and customers start raise their expectations. My question is, does anyone have any evidence that Clevo is addressing the problem? Does anyone have a machine where the BIOS does recognize 4GiB? - B. |

Alright, well i have had my AX20 for a few months now. I am running 4GB of RAM and showing all 4, i am not sure what your problem is, are both RAm sticks the same, sometimes that has an effect.. This system rocks. I have not had any problems running any games with high to very high settings. BTW i do not have the SLI, i am running the 1.8Ghz Turion, and one (1) 7950 GTX. I have yet to benchmark, but i have no noticeable lag in any games.
