BIOS password locked....
My friend was given an E1705 (electronics pallet) that has BIOS p/w locked. It has an MX25L8005 bios chip. Can the password be read using an eeprom reader?

If not, how are your solding skills?
A new bios chip could be installed on the M/B... |

soldering skills arent bad but I'd rather use hot air. But I'd rather learn to use eeprom reader and programmer for future use. but if I should have to go with hot air de-solder. Would I have to program the bios chip before the installation or solder the chip & flash it with an updated bios? I dont have floppy drives to use on laptops. Thanks for the reply.

From what i understand, the BIOS password is not stored in the BIOS chip you mentioned here, It is coded into the keyboard controller chip or a separate Security chip depending on the laptop, and reading it is near impossible unless you have a understanding of "Dell's Propriatory Code"
I have seen people selling the chips on Ebay but I am not sure I seen it for the E1705. It maybe easier to simply transfer ownership and then call Dell support to get a master reset code.

If the machine is "clean" - checked against the serial number - you can try and pay to get Dell to fix it and register under your name.
cheers ...

Of course, another option that might be much quicker and possibly less expensive would be to simply purchase and install a new motherboard from ebay...

Dell will sometimes transfer ownership with simply the service tag and express service codes (Online Transfer)
I have done it, and simply left the old owners info blank So as long as the laptop was not reported stolen you may get the ownership transfer done.

Thanks I called dell late in the day on a sunday and asked if I could get help unlocking it. They asked for the express service code, a minute later she said call the dept between 8-5 on weekday. I wonder if she was checking to see if it was reported stolen?

but even if its not, only certain internal support groups have the password generator, and they are business hours, so if you call outside that they usually cant get anyone to generate a password
