Alienware Area-51m 776 Review

I had about 10,000 words written when I came to the part about checking your multimedia buttons and so I checked it and one of them I know now is a buttom for internet to bring your current page to homepage lol, so bare with me as im retyping everything.

I bought my laptop off of ebay in 2004. It seemed like a really good deal when I first seen it on ebay. There were alot of accessories in with it and I didn't think ebay would be any different then buying directly from alienware so I bought it. It arived to me after 10 or so days, mail man didn't even ask me to sign anything so funny. It was just like siting in my mums and pops front lawn, so i nabed it, brought it in. It must have like been siting out in the cold some where all knight cuz it felt like a giant ice ball when I got it into my room. I opened it up, next thing I new I was downstairs taking the battery out of it wondering why star wars galaxies had locked up on me. I didnt know at the time if it was suppose to shut off with the battery inside of it, or if I was supose to take the battery out first since it was in this blue screen of death thing. That happened after about a half hour of use, which didn't bother me but it blue errored on me a ton. More on that later though, besides that everything worked like it was suppose to and I was happy with it.

The build quality has been good for the 4 years Iv owned it, theres been alot of things that Iv had to replace and some things i havent managed to solve on my own. I need a new pcmcia card slot, I had bought a linksis cisco duel band draft n pcmcia card for it and after a few minutes of use it will spit out the connection. I need a new cd drive for it also, as that thing never did work in it, also i had to replace the memory in it. After having countless blue errors, to the point where calling it mundane would have been extreamly understaing it, I alsmost heaved it into the garbage at one point. I switched the memory in it, and that fixed it, after having had it for 3 years.

Im still typing with it right now though, and I feel like its rock solid. Theres 3 multimedia buttons on this laptop, one I just found out is a site to homepage button, one is I dont know , it has a circle with a line going through it, and one is for mail.

my specs are similar to this Operating System:

Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Case: Area-51m Case with 15.4" WideSXGA+ 1680x1050 LCD Display - Conspiracy Blue
Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology 3.0GHz 800MHz FSB w/ 512KB Cache
Motherboard: SiS648FX + SiS963L AGP8X Chipset
Memory: 1024MB DDR PC-3200 - 2x512 SO-DIMMs
Video Card: Area-51m ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 PRO Module with 128MB DDR
Sound Card: Sound-Blaster Pro Compatible 3D Audio
Hard Drive: 40GB 5400 RPM ATA100
Smart Bay One: 24x10x24 CD-RW / 8X DVD Combo w/Software
Ethernet NIC: Integrated 10/100Mb Ethernet NIC
Modem: 56K Modem with V.92 Technology
Remote Control: Area-51m Multi-function Infrared Remote control
Mobile Transport : Alienware® Premium Messenger Case <-- switched for the backpack
Multifunction Printers: Lexmark PrinTrio X1150 with 6' USB Cable

My has a 80 gigabyte harddrive in it, and a 16.1 inch screen witch has been superb, and thats an understatement. Im all typed out so i guess ill go straight to the pros and cons...

pros:screen, keyboard, gpu power, gaming power, multimedia power, build to last, portability as i have traveled with it to extream places like coffe shops in downtowns where theres itty bitty places to sit and it works fine.

cons: price,batterylife,

For any one wondering my experience only makes me want another alienware even more especialy the new i7 mobile processor m15x. The m17x also , iv been telling everyone how great this lignup is, and i know the build quality is there for you as a buyer to admire. With ssds in there new lignups, blue ray burners, i7 extreams with turbo boost, and the brand spaken new 260s and 280s these things are the best deal thats goin be out there for this type of product such as alienware for a long long time, so I'd buy yours to keep as thats why they have the nameplates. enjoy yours if you get one...

It's in amazing condition for being 5 years old. I'm actually surprised it's still working strong for you.

In all honesty the laptop has been through hell and back. Iv had it everywhere, in bundled bags with everything falling out of them, iv left it during winter in cars, for moths at a time, iv carryed it in duffel bags through many streets, thing is like the energizer battery, keeps going and going and going...

Really? Wow. I had the earlier version of the 776 (the 2002) model and i had nothing but problems with it. My M5750's GPU died a few months back and had that replaced, but that notebook was going on three years old. As soon as it bites the dust, I'm gonna invest in a new Alienware system.

oh yea...iv had to do everything with it besides ripping out the motherboard, or lcd. IV had to glue practicly every peace back on it, from hinges in lcd that clam it shut, to the coverings for the heatsinks you see in the back of it, to the alienware head on the top of the lcd panel...iv always used wipes on it though cleaning it every week, and i take it apart every so often and use that anti static dust spray, for the lcd i use a combination of isotope alcohol how ever u say it, with 1 part that and 2 parts water...seems to have always kept it going...i did at one time buy a laptop cooler for it but the cooler i was using was pushing the air outwards blowing the hot air back into the machine, it didnt work very well and the only reason i had goton it in the first place was to prevent it from bsod's, lo and behold later i found that to be a memory thing, so i got rid of the cooler. i need quite a few things for it though, new gpu, pcmcia card, dvd burner, infrared device...

Wow. I didn't realize that. Can we get some more close up shots of it to see some of the work you've done?
