The issue of low sound in Ubuntu has been reported back in 2007, and in between the new kernel should have fixing it. Have you tried with the latest kernel?
Another tip from Ubuntu forum is : "adding to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" cheers ...
