Sony PCG-K23 VERY Slow

I have an old Sony PCG-K23 and it is horribly slow. I just installed Windows last and it copied the files quickly, but to expand the files it took around 4 hours. The fan speed up to ridiculous speeds throughout the install. After the install I rebooted and it took like 20 minutes to load Windows and when it finally loaded it wouldn't do anything. I know there is a problem with the hardware but I am not sure what that problem is. I just bought a new harddrive for it because the old one was corrupt and I ran many RAM tests on it. I am thinking its the motherboard. I can however load up live OS's fine and they operate normally. The problem seems to occur with the communication from the harddrive to the CPU. Can this be fixed or do I need to get a new motherboard?

Thanks.

I would not write off the machine so quickly. How about taking it apart and clean it up a bit? Applying new thermal paste as well?

Swap out the ram? Use one stick and see, if you have 2?

Take a look at the sticky here in the section and see if you can find the service guide to your model.

cheers ...
