jjthenovice is a n00b, but everyone loves n00bs!
With vista, I was using AVG free ver. Then I switched to Win 7 and started having trouble with AVG, so I switched to Avast. That worked well. I have since switched to MSE. I love it. It integrates well with the OS and is not a resource hog. I periodically scan with Malwarebytes too.
