That's what I imagined I think I'll go with the PC-6400. Thank you for the info!

I'll second dave-p...my 9400/e1705 is also running 4GB of 800Mhz ram and runs fine (just underclocked to 667Mhz).

All DDR2 must work if JEDEC standards. Nice to get the 64bit bit info from the guys. So only the RAM is the 64bit issue? Nice to know. Thanks.

Yeah, nice to know :P Too bad you can't get more than 3.2 GB of RAM, but i guess it'll do. I can't wait to try Win 7 64-bit!

Well, almost everything is on its way, so soon I'll let you guys know how everything went. I ordered a T7200, 4GB 800MHz RAM, the geforce go 7950GTX (sweet!!), a new power supply (130W) and some AS5 thermal paste Oh, and one Nvidia sticker and one Core 2 Duo intel inside sticker... lol

Cheers!

matchbox2022 has a few people on his/her side.
Some burning questions!

I read on here that the bios is able to handle faster ram on the inspiron / m1710 series, that true for sure? How fast? (What you know for sure). Also I've been 'trying' to get the timings down, but for some reason, the CL value of 5 refuses to change, I'm using rightmark's memory analyzer to do it. Everything else changes though and I've confirmed THEY work, so my timings are something like ""5""-4-4-12 now. Does show improvement too in benching.

I was also wondering about the hinges on this thing. I'm looking at replacing them but has anyone found that they tend to just be loose under the bezel? I'd check but it's exam period....thus...no time for anything at all.

I was also curious about replacing the pathetic right hand side video card fan with something with some more umgff. Do you think a bigger fan would be too much draw on the board if I plugged it in directly to the mobo?

Thats too bad about the 32bit chipset, I was under the impression myself that it could handle 64 bit. A 64bit cpu though.

NOW this might sound like a huge newbie question, but if I were to install win7 64bit, would it be able to access all the memory? Or still not because of the chipset. Also...ummm...will any apps that are running on my xp 32bit setup work? At all? Or do I specifically need 64 bit versions, this includes games and office as well, along with rivatuner.

And does anyone know which drivers are the ones for nvidia which stop allowing overclocking IF YOU flashed your video card?

AND haha, FINALLY!! Has anyone tried putting a fan where the battery is in order to directly cool the vcard (since it heats like a behemoth and I already put as5 on it) with just removing the hinge cover for airflow?

I know that's a lot of questions, I appreciate anything you guys can give me. You're always helpful.

Oh and to the dude eoy4. I hate to break it to you, but a 7950 go gtx is JUST a stock 7900 go gt PRE-Overclocked to 575/600. You can overclock it with rivatuner and the newest drivers, and so long as you have GOOD cooling going on, it's exactly, EXACTLY the same. I know this cause a friend of mine has this exact laptop with a 7900 in it, and it really is zero better than mine.

Soooo, spending the extra dough doesn't seem logical. I have a 7950 because I didn't know better at the time myself. I think if a card back then at least, failed at higher frequencies, they'd downgrade it if it were the same type. I'm sure they do that, they do likewise for making core 2 solo's, they are just already made dualcores either ones with a defective core or a disabled one, to save money.

I know that. But right now I went with the cheapest alternative, and I got a 7950GTX for much much less than a 7900 gt on ebay. BUT! there are bad news, I'm afraid.

I live in Costa Rica. The card got shipped to Miami, FL, from where a courier service would bring it here to my home. But the damned package was not delivered properly by USPS, so the card never arrived at the correct address in Miami. So I'm currently struggling with my courier service and with USPS to see if they find the package or give me my money back. Argh, I hate living here sometimes.

Anyway, I said I'd keep you posted :P I've not ordered the CPU or RAM yet, and probably never will. I'm thinking about saving for an alienware or a nice Studio XPS, if I don't get the 7950. I'll never find another one for that price again.

I got it for 200 bucks. It's not the cheapest thing ever, but those cards cost a lot more right now.

Of course, it would be best if the card had actually arrived :/ This sucks.

So could the FAQ get updated to show the list of cpus it can take like it does for the GPUs?

I am not sure about what will work for me. I have a t2400 (intel core) and am not sure if i can change to the t7x00 (intel core 2). I have a e1705.

You can put a T7200, T7400, or a T7600 in the E1705

Up to the T7600G will work, although you won't be able to overclock unless you could force the bios to become a m1710s. Which shouldn't be an issue...really...since the boards are damned identical. Be sure you get a FCPGA and not a FCBGA though, lest you want to be soldering it permanently. :P and it being a socket M too.

For Vcards..you can put from 7800-7950 go gtx in there, quadro 1500-3500, AND a quadro fx 1600M OR 3600M (Kinda).

The bios doesn't recognize the newer cards though, I heard that the 1600M works, but there was a whole thread here about the 3600M kicking ass but lacking a lot of controls, mainly the ability to turn on the inverter (dark as shit screens).

The 1600M 'would' kick the 7950 gtx's ass if it weren't so limited by a 128 bus.
Thus the best one really is a 7950 gtx or quadro fx 3500M, whatever's cheaper.
I might try making a manual brightness control switch in a couple years and upgrade to the 3600M though for shit n giggle.
