When will AW fit the i7 975 3.33GHz and nvidia 280GTX? Already supplied in this config by Rock in the UK. Now that would be sensational.

I havnt found that people using the desktop versions of the i7 dont get the full turboboost rated speeds due to power or cooling restrictions. Anyone looking into this type of notebook should consider micro atx shuttle based desktops.

Basically said that while desktop CPU's do have Turbo boost you are looking at about 18% boost. On some of the mobiles 72% boost. These are not my words or thoughts but? Because desktops do not suffer from the same thermal restrictions they are designed to do less. The article went further that server models of i7 Turbo would be less or non existent. That did cause me thought. And the last of what I just said was just Parroting what I read. Having said that I find reading what you wrote to be at odds? And that confuses me. I could say more but at this time I can't link so no point. The gist was the mobile 2Ghz that can Turbo to 3.2Ghz is really a 3.2Ghz that has been designed to manage heat such that it downclocks to maintain a thermal envelope? I find it ironic that turbo boost is actually a downclocking scheme. Do not get me wrong I do understand. It does explain why not so important in desktops. Anyway we all are still learning and I am just throwing out things I have read. Feel free to come back at me as I am not even pretending I understand it. ![]() ![]() ![]()

What you misunderstand is how your application benefits from i7. Turbo boost only helps if your application cannot benefit from the additional cores found in an i7 cpu in this case 4 cpus. If a game or application needs only 2 then your wasting the benefit of 2 additional cores. Turbo boost steps in by ramping up clock speed on the cores the app does utilize for example if a game uses only 2 cores then TB will then turn off 2 of the 4 cores and ramp up the 2 remaining cores to as high as the thermal threshold and power allotment will allow in this case for the i720qm 2.4ghz at 2 cores.

Interesting review - thanks.
I'd love to get my hands on one of these ... only thing stopping me is the weight. Also very curious how the i7 920 version runs in the m15x ... as it's a very hot sucker in the desktop version. (I also smiled when I noticed that it was "Dell-Machina" doing a review of an Alienware notebook. And no, I'm not trying to start anything - I've had Dell and Alienware gaming notebooks and enjoyed them both immensely. And yes, I know Alienware = Dell ). |
