Is the Is the 8X DVD recorder that comes with the XPS Gen1 a DL recorder? If not can it be upgraded via firmware to do DL?

I don't think so, and no, you cannot update just the firmware to make a non-DL to a DL, it is hardware constraint.

most likely you could change the drive to a DL if your so inclined
