I walked away from Final Fantasy after VII. I still play tactics but that is it. I tried XII and the game plays itself so whats the point.

Another show, another tiny dribble of new FFXIII info.

By Jeremy Parish 10/09/2008

You're reading a Tokyo Game Show 2008 preview, which we've broken into three sections to make it easy to sift through during this week of convention madness. Check out TGS.1UP.COM for all (meaning words, screens, and videos) of our coverage from the show.

What's the game about? It's about a year overdue, that's what.
What's new for TGS? You know the drill by now: Every time a new trade show rolls around, Square Enix takes the original Final Fantasy XIII trailer it debuted at E3 2006, splices in a few seconds of new footage, and calls it a day. After about half a dozen iterations, the game's trailer now consists of almost entirely different footage than the debut. So, in effect, Square's managed to churn out a whopping two trailers for what is arguably its biggest and most important game ever in the space of two and half years. This time around, though, there was a fair chunk of real-time footage included! No gameplay, though -- just in-game cinemas.
SCREENS: Click the image above to check out all Final Fantasy XIII screens.

What's our take? Well, it goes without saying that FFXIII is bound to be huge. But the prospects of us learning how the game plays before the PS3 demo arrives in Japan inside the new edition of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete sometime in March are slim to none.
Even if the mechanics turn out to be stupid or boring or broken, FFXIII is destined to be a stunning game. The new TGS trailer featured a mix of new and retreaded CG footage -- the usual pigtailed-girl-standing-on-a-cliff bit, the old familiar gallery of Eidelons (Siren, Ifrit, Carbuncle, and the Shiva Cycle), the enigmatic heroine "Lightning" blowing things up per usual -- as well as a number of never-before-seen sequences. A massive airship opened its dock and projected targeting reticules to aid smaller vessels in docking in its interior; vast aerial armadas cruised through the sky; Lightning faced off against a massive monster atop the train she's been boarding since May 2006; the girl seen standing on the cliff appeared to be escorted (possibly unwillingly) by a crew of soldiers as a long-haired woman in a uniform and glasses (think FFVIII's Quistis, but more militaristic) greeted the procession. It's all very big and grand and epic, just like Final Fantasy XIII should be. The real-time footage was even more impressive, showing off a couple of in-game cinemas. One showed Lightning and the pig-tailed girl talking as they trekked across a verdant valley. The second showed Lightning and the man known only as "Mr. 33 cm" having a tense conversation. Nothing terribly exciting, especially simply in text, but the in-game visuals are nothing less than exceptional -- detailed, colorful, and excellently animated. Of course, until the demo arrives, all we can do with FFXIII is speculate how it will play and how its pieces will fit together. But happily, Square is finally beginning to pin a date to the game: FFXIII is confirmed for a 2009 release in Japan. When in 2009 is up in the air, and the U.S. version will arrive even later than that, but at least it's a start.

New details on the most anticipated RPG for PS3!

By Emily Balistrieri 01/29/2007

Last week, Japanese magazine Famitsu posted an interview with the three directors of the Final Fantasy XIII Fabula Nova Crystalis trilogy. Having looked it over, we've gleaned some tidbits from the section with Motomu Toriyama, who is currently working on Final Fantasy XIII as well as FFXII: Revenant Wings.
Crystals have always been standard fare in Final Fantasy, but in XIII they aren't just stones. Some of them are benevolent life-bringing...creatures, one might say, while others are more sinister. The game world is a binary one in which humanity wouldn't survive save for the good crystals. "[They] think about what sort of environment would be appropriate for [humans] and create that space, which is a Cocoon," elaborated Toriyama. Outside that safe haven is Pulse, where monsters roam and bad crystals make trouble. Anyone under the influence of an "alien substance" created in Pulse (which have a name that is still under wraps) is shipped out to a quarantine.
Our heroine is still rather mysterious. She calls herself Lightening, but keeps her real name secret. Toriyama didn't want to give much away, saying only, "Why she doesn't tell her real name will be revealed in the plot."
Final Fantasy XIII's battle system is said to be the most intense yet. Click the image above to check out all of our Final Fantasy XIII screens.

As we've heard before, the battle system is going to be a bit different than fans are used to. Not only will the battles be seamless, but Toriyama stated that, "since it's on the Playstation 3 we've got our eye on new presentation. The foundation is based on active-time battles, but the waiting time until you choose a command is gone for the most part. The image we presented to the public -- rushing into a real time battle with that kind of force -- we want to continue that overflowing feeling of tension that RPGs up to now haven't had." The most surprising innovation, however, is that summons are now going to be part mecha and play an expanded role of more than just battle support. "The treatment of summons beasts has changed quite a bit," Toriyama revealed, "The fact that the players can summon will not change, but what happens after that will be something totally different." The example they discussed was Shiva, who can transform into a motorcycle. Toriyama hinted that he thinks "it might be the case" that you can ride it during a fight. Whoa.

Very few details are released right now. We don't even know if this game is gonna be turn based. Or random battles... Those shots look like random battles.

How long would a play-through of the game with missions take?

As far as hours, of gameplay…if you play straight through the story it would be about 60 hours of gameplay. But if you decided to play through all the missions, it would be, well, basically eternity. It could last forever. The enemies in the Pulse area are much stronger, as well, so there’s lots of replay value there.
