Dell D610 won't power up

I'm not a native english speaker but I'm trying to explain my problem as accurate as possible.

Since a few months my Dell D610 won't power up regularly when I press the power button. There are no lights visible when the button is pressed as there're no other signs of powering up the harddisk or cpu fan noise etc.

The weird thing about this is that from time to time the machine does power up even instantly. But obviously I can't rely on these random and rare moments. So I tried different scenarios with and w/o battery (battery is charged) with a different power adapter, different power outlets. Holding the power button pressed for 10 secs. All with no success.

Last week or so after one of those rare moments when the notebook powered up again I let the machine run in the office during the night so I could start working on the next morning, but when I checked it the next morning the OS seemed to have crashed. I'm actually not sure what exactly happened but in any case the laptop was hibernating and I wasn't able to wake it up again (pushing the power button). So again I thought I was out of luck. But then when I removed the battery I was suddenly able to power it up again, instantly. Wow, that would've been twice in a row! I did some work on that day and shut the thing down again at the evening just to test my luck, since then the darn thing is dead again.

But once the notebook runs everything is fine.

What do you think? Any hope ?

cheers!

Before anything I would take it apart and clean it up, and applying new thermal paste - for start.

cheers ...
