Help desiding another laptop purchase

Hi i recently bough a sager 4750 and love it but lets face it its not portable. I was looking at xtremenotebooks.com and they have a 15.4inch notebook which has more than three hours of battery life. but my main concern is one thing how loud are the fans. I want to know when idiling will the fans be on and will the fans be on when i do simple tasks. I have to know this becuase the fans in the 4750 are annoying! So all i want to know is when you are doing simple tasks such as word internet soliatre and stuff like that will the fans be on. Also I do not want centrino!!!!!!!!!!! so please people dont give me suggestions that i should buy centrino cause i really dont want to go to intel Amd all the way

Well there wont be much difference in fans and such if you go AMD. Pentium M (not Centrino) is the ONLY truly mobile processor out right now. That is the only way you will get what you want. Intel is fine! What do you have against it?

the bottleneck for gaming is currently much more dependent on the GPU rather than the CPU. as long as you have the same MR9700, you will be looking at very similar 3d performance regardless of if you have an amd/intel processor.

i'm not sure where you heard that "the centrino can't do shi*" when it comes to doom3, but people have said it runs fine at medium settings on their p-m machines. i'm currently trying to get myself a copy to test on my laptop, but that's what many people have said. if you really are looking for the ultimate gaming performance on a laptop, you shouldn't be trying to upgrade the CPU, u should be trying to get a MR9800 like on the dell XPS.

some of the new centrino builds will get you much more portability / batt life than many of the AMD comparisons out there, like the 4750. if you really need to stay AMD, try the acer ferrari for a very portable system. the batt life won't be as good as a system like the cl56 / mitac8050, but at least you won't have to buy from "hated intel," i guess.

well i wanted to think you knew what you were talking about and i know centrino can do non-shi*

Seriously, PM is fine for D3. As Aikeo said, the GPU is the bottlenect. If you don't care about portability then for all means go for the AMD 64. But if you battery life 2+ hours you have to get the PM.

centrino aint that bad for gaming...

i have the MSI 510C which has a 1.6 Banias, 512meg RAM and a 64meg 9600 and i can play Doom3 at 800x600 with High Quality and Far Cry at 1023x768, everythin set to High and 2xAF and "Medium" AA, both very playable framerates (im comparing this to playing on my desktop which is a 2500+@2400mhz with a 9800pro, at slightly higher settings, so it really is playable!! ). Im not exactly sure what the framerate is as i havent done any benchies with those games but a get just under 10000 in 3D Mark 2k1 and just under 3000 in 2k3.

Plus, the fan only kicks in at about 39-40C and isnt loud at all, and i can get 5+hrs out of the battery depending on what im doin.

So i guess if u want sumthin mobile that still has a fair bit of grunt, u could get a centrino with a 2ghz Dothan (or 1.8 if money is tight), 1gig of ram and a 9700 with 128meg.

Hope that helps a bit.

pb.

actually if you read benchmarks its on par with an amd 64 3400+ and it beats the amd 3400+ and Amd 3700+ in some audio files or something like that. And I was wrong that it was similar if not the same as them during gaming. But I dont want to buy one yet cause I head that the new centrinos are comintg out.

I was going by the benchmarks on toms and anandtech. In those benchmark, the 2.0 ghz p-m was on par with the amd 64 3000+.

edit:

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...oc.aspx?i=2191

hes probably refering to the new dothan with 533 mhz fsb.

if you can wait until Q1 / '05, then yeah wait for alviso

most people assume when you ask "what notebook should i buy" that you actually need to buy one within the next few weeks or month.

just ran doom3 on my cl56 at 1024x768 res, high detail, decent framerate. didn't run spectacular, but it's definitely playable.

No they shouldnt be. But they will come on every now-and-then. You can just run it at a lower speed so its not as powerful anyways.
