Long delay for "Insert File" in Outlook

I wasn't sure where to post this question.
I have several drives mapped to network shares. Depending on my connection/location, some of those network shares are unavailable. When I go to insert a file in Outlook, it automatically defaults to "My Documents", fine. When I try to use the pull down menu to look elsewhere, it takes forever. Approximately as long as it takes to discover that the network shares are unavailable. If I disconnect those network shares, it responds quickly.
Is there a tweak to get Outlook/Windoze to not look at those shares until I actually click the drive letter from the pulldown menu?
TIA. I searched the web but got limited results.

It may be because a service is stopped/disabled. I am not 100% sure, but there is a service that caches the network/computer/drive info and if that's disabled, then the computer has to probe every time it brings up the windows API for files.

Have you monkeyed with any services recently (for fine-tuning)? If not, have you done any Windows Updates / Office Updates (they sometimes cause problems unrelated to what they intend to update/fix).

Sorry I'm not much help,

I find in the best of conditions that the "dropdown" list takes a long time, so I frequently use the "Up folder" icon to get me to My Computer where I can then go onto my HDD where ever I want. Good luck!
