5690 problem with multiple routers
I have a Linksys G wireless router at home that I use with no problem with my 5690 and it's internal wireless card. However at work I have to stop myself from tossing my lappy out the window sometimes.
We have three Linksys G routers to get coverage in the building. They have the same SSID but are assigned different channels to avoid conflicting. It also has MAC restriction turned on. I can connect to it with no problem, however my 5690 tries to jump from router to router with no apparent rhyme or reason. I can look at the site survey and it will not choose the strongest signal or stick with it when it gets it. I have tried both letting the Gigabyte wireless program and windows control the wireless and there is no difference between them. This is driving me nuts, I can't keep a consistent connection, any ideas on how I can fix this? Tex |

In the Windows (XP) Wireless setup you should be able to setup a Preferred Network. It will probably list ALL the AP's, you might be able to delete the ones you do not want to connect to and leave only the one you do.
I'm not 100% how this would work, but it's something to look at if you haven't already.

My problem is work has three different routers with the same SSID. The are set on different channels to avoid conflict and my lappy feels like sampling all of them, not even sticking with the one with the highest dB.

Do you NEED all 3 routers?
Do you NEED to connect to all three routers throughout the day? If so, you may be stuck. If you always find the one of the routers consistantly gives you the best connection, then in XP, you should be able to remove the other available routers, and click on the 'advanced' button and uncheck the always connect box.

Sorry but I'm not sure how to pick one router when they all three have the same SSID.

I have seen wireless cards that allow you to set the channel that you want to work on see if yours has this ability and then just set your card only to work on one of the 3 channels. This should keep you connected to the specific router on that channel.

If you have the 5690, do you have the Gig. Wireless Nic? Seems like you can set a default setup and channel on the utility software that comes with the drivers. Don't allow Windows to manage your wireless settings. I will look at my laptop and check to see if I can do it, and get you some better instructions.

Ah, I never thought of trying to set the channel rather than letting it choose it myself. I do have the Gigabyte wireless card, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the assist. I got switched to another station with a single WAP but I'll give it a shot the next time I'm at the one with three WAP.
