Intellimouse Drivers problem

No matter what order I install things in or if I disable the trackpad or what, The MS intellimouse software keeps associating itself with the trackpad instead of the usb mouse...this is very frustrating as I really need those extra buttons to work right for Maya. any suggestions would be appreciated.
