"The DVD burner is real picky about DVD+R media. I tried some 8X ones, and it doesn't even recognize the media. 8X DVD-R's work fine. Brand name was Ridata."

Thats a problem older DVD-Burner have with 8x media nonregarding the manufacturer.
If you update your drive with a new firmware the burner will work with that medias.
Mine a toshiba sd-r6372 in my clevo D870P (the same as a sager8790) reported "media is write protected".
I will install the firmware tomorrow and will report if the problem is fixed.
