If the Ibook G5 is coming soon, I would wait. I've never been an iMAC user, but I would love to be one someday. Their laptops and desktop computers are so cool! Even the OS looks very attractive

do you really need the power of the g5? what will you be doing with it? I bought the mac mini and had no problems at all with iMovie, iDVD, and iPhoto. I guess it comes down to if you really need that power or not. And as far as G5 ibooks/ powerbooks coming out soon, I really wouldnt count on that, especially since they JUST released that g4 upgrades.
And the mac os doesnt look cool, it is. It's fantastic. I now hate windows (not that I didn't before, but now I know that I do).

Tiger will cost $129 to upgrade to if Apple follows the same patterns they have lately for OS X release costs. The only time you can get an upgrade is if Apple has announced an exact release date. Thats typicially when they start the up-to-date clock for $20 upgrades. My Powerbook was bought when Panther had a final date, and it cost me $20 to get the upgrade discs above Jaguar.

What kind of question is this? Personally, I don't care if I just use the computer for homework and/ or web surfing. I would still want the power of the G5. Probably others feel the same as I do ![]()

that's what I'm saying. i would love the power of a G5 and a serious video card, but my mini's G4 and radeon 9200 does everything perfectly fine. i just can't game on it, not that I would want to anyway- that's what my shuttle pc is for. ![]() That, and this G4 is just so damn friggin cute and sexy. Everytime I am watching tv I'm like- "look at that damn thing on the coffetable, its so cool." ![]() Hopefully I will do a review on him when I get home later tonight.

The only downside I can see for my use is lack of dual monitor support. But it might work as an awesome DVD player/web/music system for my front living room, replacing the noiser Shuttle XPC out there currently. |

From what I gather, you're not likely to see a G5 iBook too soon. The problem is the G5 chips put out a lot of heat and draw a lot of power.
A chip like that CAN be used in a laptop (if you look in my sig you'll that my lappie has similar heat and power requirements) but to do so you need to make certain compromises in terms of battery size and air flow. As I'm sure Drakino can attest, the XPS / 9100 latops are almost as thick as Kwick7's Mini Sure, Apple could make a system like that, but it would fly in the face of the kind of design they want to present. I don't think Apple is about to ship an "iBrick"......There probably will be a G5 iBook eventually. Just not as soon as you might hope.

I'm in the same boat... I'm ready to upgrade my wife's old G3 533mhz iBook (which still works with Panther, though it's definitely slowed down)... and I stopped short of getting here the new 12" Powerbook or 12" iBook, because I have a feeling that they might just drop the G5 iBook soon.
I think I'm going to hold off 'till the Tiger release... if they don't announce a G5 iBook at that time, I'll just go ahead and get an iBook... (and, at least, feel like I saved $129 on the upgrade). But if you have the funds, jump in to Mac and OS X with a Mac Mini while you are waiting! |

Since we just finally saw the Powerbook speedbump, it is still going to be a long ways off before a G5 iBook comes out. G5 Powerbook will ship first (at least 6 months off still), then sometime after that (likely up to a year if not longer), the G5 iBook will ship.
That is assuming the next upgrade in the Powerbook line is to a G5. Dual core G4 technology is pretty much ready now, so it may be a dual core G4 as the next upgrade. iBook for low end single core, Powerbook for high end dual core. |
