46-48C during idle?? After being cleaned.
I don't understand why this thing stays so hot. In an effort to cool it down, I did as some recommended here, took the keyboard off, cleaned underneath. Took the plate under the keyboard off and made sure there wasn't lint or stuff there, vaccuumed that out.
Removed the underside compartments and vaccuumed the fan and heatsink areas. Everything looked clean when I started, but I went thru the motions regardless. While the metal heatsink plate was off ( the one under the Keyboard) I even put a micro layer of artic silver on the chip contact points for the cpu and gpu, but left the thermal tape that was there in two areas for other items. Upgraded the bios to 1.00.10 and upgradd the ATI drivers to the 8.04 which require the bios upgrade. I have the laptop angled up in the back, to where the back bottom edge is 1-3/4" off the desk. No vent obstructions. As soon as I turn it on, the fans go into high speed mode. Mobmeter still shows between 46-48C during idle. What is the FN+F10 key supposed to do, as I do not think mine works. Unless it is to kick the fans into high speed, at which my fans are always on high speed from the time it boots. Is there any way to cool this thing down or to turn the fans down? I just booted it up, and as soon as it went into windows xp, the fans are at full speed, and mobmeter shows 41C at boot. |

Sounds like the thermal sense is not working. Meaning it is tellingthe system it's stuck at a temp. I had one go bad on a motherboard and it would tell me the system temp was 150 F when it was only 122 f , it tries to tell me the case temp was 145 f when it was barely 77 f in the case. So they can and do go bad. If it has been like this since day one I woul dbe calling sager and explaining the situation to them. I bet they have you RMA before it dies. By the way don't feel alone I sent mine back because it decided to just die, no power no nothing after running with no issues for 8 months. Things happen, this is electronics.

Ok, I opened her up again. This time I made sure using compressed air nothign was there ( she was clean as there was nothing to blow-out).
Being an avid past overclocker/soldering pots onto mobo's and avid user of peltiers and watercooling in desktops with success and no failures, I decided to remove the heatpipe/heatsink module and to my utter surprise found a piece of material bonded to the heatsink and cpu interface that must be some sort of "production" type heat transfer "foil-paper" as it had some black stuff on both sides of it. I promptly removed this stuff with a flat razor blade and cleaned both the cpu heat surface with alcohol and the heatpipe's heatsink plate with alcohol. The heatsink polished up to a shine nicely. I then applied Artic Silver 5 to the cpu's surface, again with a flat razor blade so-as to not apply too much ( very thin film is best). I then reassembled the system and turned her on. Right away, huge difference. She now idles at 41 C, from the normal 46-48 C she was at. ![]() |

wow, temp dropped to 39 C ( getting better with time) and the fans even turned off ( first time).

it does take a while for AS to "cure."
