Hi,

I was wondering if I could buy the CompUsa Pc 2700 333 speed 512mb laptop module (or another generic brand - about $100 here), to get up to 1gb or if something more proprieatary is needed for the S-360.

Also, is there a big difference in speed after the upgrade?

No, you can't use that.

The S360 uses MicroDIMMs, so you must buy a MicroDIMM module. Here is a 512MB module that I ordered off of NewEgg, for $128 for a 512MB stick:

Wow...very cool, thanks.....If you don't mind, please also report on how simple it would be for a very very non-mechanical person to complete (that would be me) I noticed you put in a new hard drive (I am not even going to think about attempting that one - but that must be an amazing difference in performance).

BTW, I saw your link about the E5C - I have the E5 w/o the pre-amp - they are amazing - I have used them on the S-360 when watching Tivo to Go files- great phones.

The RAM is very simple.

Turn the laptop over, you will see a panel secured by two screws. Unscrew those two screws, remove the panel. Install RAM (insert it at a 45-degree angle, and push the module in *all the way*, then snap it down). Screw the panel back in. The real performance benefit of this is when you have many programs open at once.

Yes, there is an amazing difference in performance going from a 4200rpm hard drive to 7200rpm hard drive. 7200rpm hard drive, 1024MB RAM, and a clean reformat / install of Windows XP Pro turns this cute little notebook into a screaming beast. I'm running Windows XP Pro, SQL Server, IIS, VMWare, Word, Outlook, Visio, and six sessions of Internet Explorer, and a internet radio through Windows Media Player,and it's still ready for more.

Swapping out a hard drive isn't too difficult, if you've ever opened a laptop chassis before. Just unscrew the screws at the bottom, remove the keyboard, unscrew and remove the top chassis cover, and then you will have access to the hard drive cage. Take the old hard drive out, and either clone it (with a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE converter and a program like DiskImage or Norton Ghost) or put new hard drive in and do a clean format of your OS.

And yes, E5C's are quite nice! Isolating canalphones + DVD on an airplane, is a little slice of heaven in coach class.

Thanks Kent....the RAM install sounds easy, the 7200 drive...that is definitely something I will save until I am ready for the next laptop (in case this one doesn't make it!)

I have the upgraded RAM and the shure headphones (e3c), but the HD probably isn't going to happen for a while at least. Buy the headphones off of ebay to say some money.

You can also find the 512 for the lowest price at eWiz.com (90 and change). However, you should call them first to make sure it isn't backordered.
