The following are the 9300 next to the Sony Vaio A170. 9300 on the left, Sony on the right. Both screens are set to max brightness.

Pure white full screen bitmaps. Because of the sparkle mid-coating, the 9300 looks silver/grey instead of white. It's also

sparklesville, but that doesn't really shine through the picture, unless of course you're veiwing these on a 9300.










The 9300 likes it on top.

From the pix with backgound, Dell looks like it has more contrast and saturation of color. Would you say so in real life? Is it because Sony is so bright to the point it starts to "wash out" contrast? Give and take, I guess.

What are we looking for in the 'light leak' picture? I can't see anything unusual.

You're looking at the bleeding from the bottom of the screen. It's the white-ish halo coming from the bottom. Like the moon is rising from the keyboard.

lol.. one heck of a simile there... I would've just said "the bright spot at the bottom"

In that one picture of the XP Boot Up Screen I don't see any light leakage, and it also looks like a much truer black than the one in the light leakage picture. It is the camera angle or something else thats going on?

you dont see how it gets really white at the bottom??!!... i think its called light leakage b/c it looks likt the light is escaping out WITHOUT chaging the liquid crystal in each pixel... after a while, colors just wont be colors... they get all washed out.. no good..

sonic, that looks like a really bad case of light leakage.. any chance the camera makes it worse then it is in reality??? i hope so, for your sake...

I think the guy is referring to when I originally posted the pictures, I put the wrong URL for the images for the light leak. Yes, I think the camera exagerates the light leak. It's quite noticeable, but to me it's not deal breaker, though it's really dissappointing that Dell allows this sort of quality in their notebooks. My Sony has no light leakage, no dark corners, no variation of brightness anywhere on the screen. It's very bright. The finish is liquid smooth (The Dell, in addition to the sparkly/grain effect, has visible waves in the glossy finish, not enough to show up in head on viewing, but it shows up if you look at it at an angle with the right light reflecting off of it. All these things go together to detract from the quality of the screen. I'm sure if the sparkle layer was just not their, the screen would be brighter because it wouldn't be filtering the light projection from the screen. It's apparent that Dell is just trying to crank these things out as fast and as cheep as possible. Too bad. They get these nice deals on high end video cards for these notebooks, but they don't back it up with quality in other areas.

Ahh, okay now I understand. The 'Light Leak' picture didn't load in my browser so I was looking at the picture above (Windows boot screen) and I didn't see any leaking.
