3790 wsxga wuxga side-by-side pics **more pics added, 2nd post**
One of my coworkers decided to get one with a wuxga screen so I just had to take a few pics. In our opinion, the differences between the 2 that we both agreed on:
1. Viewing angles are exactly the same. 2. The wsxga is brighter and the colors are more vibrant (we went into the advanced display properties and cranked the brightness on the wuxga so they would look as close as possible for the pictures) **this is in no way implying that the wuxga is dull looking on its own, both are absolutely gorgeous screens** 3. The wuxga has slightly smoother text. The wsxga is slightly grainy or pixelated compared to the wuxga (I never noticed this till looking at them side by side) 4. The wuxga is too hard to read at native res, but bumping up the dpi like in the last couple of pics solves the problem for a lot of things (but not all). Don't bank on being able to lower the res on the wuxga, it looks like total crap at anything but 19x12 5. Movies look the same other than the wsxga is brighter (see #2) 6. In photoshop the photos look slightly more smooth and defined on the wuxga Hope this helps someone on the fence out there. I was really surprised, I was expecting something way better than mine based on other peoples comments about how awesome the wuxga is. All I'm saying is that the wsxga is equally as awesome. Just depends on how small you like stuff. edit: We did the benchies and I forgot to put them in here wsxga-----wuxga 3166------3140----3D03 11494-----11509---3D01 26482-----26288---Aquamark 3419------3440----PC04 48.6 fps---48.8 fps-Doom3 (details in post #16) Wsxga is on the left in all pictures: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's the icons at native res: Here's a text shot with the native res on each: ![]() Closeup of previous shot: ![]() Here's a text shot with the wuxga set to 108 dpi or 113% normal: ![]() Closeup of the previous shot: ![]()

Great comparison shots. The rez lookes fantastic on both. Like the larger pictures and text. Much easier on tired eyes. I too was on the fence about the WSXGA, because of these shots, I am going for it. Thank you, thank you. Now I really feel like an "educated consumer".
Again, thanx John. ![]() |

You can really see the difference in brightness in the wordpad photos. Great photos.

Good job on the pics. I mostly agree with your comments. There is one definite opinion that should be taken with a grain of salt by other forum members.

I forgot to mention that the difference in size is not that big, but for me it crosses the line to where I have to lean forward or squint. And I have 20/20 corrected vision.

Any more picture requests? Webpages or apps, if I've got it I'll do it. Cutoff is about 2pm mst Sunday. We're meeting at work again tomorrow, after that I'm taking the camera home.

Yeah. I have to agree the 1900 one must be small. The normal for the 1680 is a bit small for me. Maybe I'm too used to 1024 and the 11xx resolutions.

Fantastic! These pics were sorely needed by those of us deciding between the two resolutions. Thank you so much!!! It's gonna be WSXGA+ for me.

Identical video driver (what came on the disk with the laptop, prob cat 4.5), directx 9.0b, no doom tweaks. The wsxga is loaded with a bunch of junk that I was trying out, the wuxga is close to a fresh install of windows. wsxga=48.6 fps wuxga=48.8 fps 0.2 second difference. Our machines are spec'd the same other than the screen and he has bluetooth. Both looked the same during the demo other than the color/brightness mentioned above. BTW, I didn't notice the stretch.

nice screeniese. I'm somewhat surprised that the sxga has brighter whites then the uxga- good to know as i'm about to make my decision. 'Cept now i dont know which I want... it almost looks 'warm' in comparison to the 'cool' whites on the sxga.
Are there multiple manufacturers of the LCD (like dell uses sharp/samsung/toshiba) that could be attributed to the difference in the brightness? |
