practicallynetworked.com has a good guide for setting up an ICS server on windows 98. Windows 98 has a more configurable ICS such as disabling of DHCP and assignment of different private IP address blocks. If your client has windows 98, Internet Gateway icon will show up when it detects ICS on the network - IE 6 is needed via windows update

What Wireless Routers do you recommend?

Nice Write Up...

A quick question... What Wireless Router do you recommend when using the Dialup wireless feature?

Thanks,
Gadgetman

If you have to do it that way, I recommend that you use two routers: Get an older (don't believe they make them anymore) WIRED router that has a dial-up modem inside. And connect that router to a regular wireless router having the settings I described. This has the benefit of upgrading your wireless router in the future to better technology.

I Need Help!

I bought a Linksys Router (WRT52GS) and I cant get it to work using wireless dialup. I called Linksys Help desk and them told me it will not work on dialup. I asked if there was another model that will work and the supervisor said no.

What are you folks using?

It will work on virtually any regular wireless router that has standard ethernet ports including the WRT54GS. Follow the directions. Bring down your firewall (both on the client and the server). If all else fails try bringing down the MTU to 1420 on the router but it shouldn't be a problem.

I have sp1 but I'm sure sp2 home has ICS. You may have to install off the cd

I spent all night trying to get my dialup wireless to work. I'll try again later.

When I set up my router, I didnt have "Obtain an IP automatically". Mine said Obtain DHCP automatically. I have DHCP disabled. Maybe the setup on my desktop isnt correct. I dont see a dial up connection on my Network Connection screen. I deleted it because it brought up netscape dialer.

Any ideas what may be wrong?

Buy a Wiflyer portable router modem for dialup or broadband from Always on wireless, google it,you might have better luck than I did trying to order one [kept saying my mastercard had an incorrect address]

:O people still use dial-up? even with all those comericals on the tv saying go to bell south ,comcast, and all those other things that gives speeds 400 times faster than dial-up for 40-60 bucks a month.. amazing.

but its a good guide but i dont know anyone who would use it unless to learn how to hook up wireless dialup.

Disable ICS temporarily. If you haven't disabled dhcp on the router, you'll be given a compatible ip address by the router which you can use to log into it. If you disabled dhcp, assign yourself an IP address 192.168.2.2 and then log in.
