That makes sense now that I've played with it for a few hours last night. It's a really great function. It played files from my external USB flash drive which was pretty cool. But just to be safe, I saved my MP3's to the Shared Music folder. Now I have to see if it will play VOB files....

Dude, I can't say enough things about this - IT'S AWSOME! Even though it's a partial boot in WinXP, it should save battery time if you're only listening to music, watching movies, pics, etc. I saw QP 1 on a dv1000 at BestBuy, and I guess it was a nice jump into the "instant on" world, but it was limited. V2 is really more versatile now. And the Brightview screen is gorgeous.

Now it make sense that re-installation of OS may kill the QP2.0 function. So the QP2.0 is not, or at least not solely, running on Linux anymore?

Yep, has entries in the XP registry, files in the program folders.

What I'm wondering is if the files located in the c:/swsetup
will re-install this program.

They would have to provide some way to get it back for those that may have used the add/remove option in XP, and then want the program back.

It may be a case that those files ONLY re-install quickplay v2.0 to a machine that at one time had 2.0 running on it and has had a fresh OS install being done, the Linux partition containing the bulk of the program not getting deleted during the XP install.

I would think the work around if you wanted to transfer the program to another hard drive would be to mirror /ghost the linux partition, then run the installer so it will re-register the program so windows will "see it".

BTW: to be on the safe side I'm making a copy of the registry entries and the program files themselves.

Anyone tried the above?

You should be aware that HP have now adopted a method to mark your HD (Tattoo) this may involve QP2, it certainly prevents making more than 1 set of recovery disks.

As to reloading the program from swsetup or any other location this might work provided the hidden partition is on the primary HDD although the software does not seem big enough in comparison to the size of the partition.

Who knows! give it a go and let us know so we don't break our Qp2

If you have any info on the marking process please do provide some links... as it does probally pertain to QP, and would be of great importance possiblly to those that replace a failed hd, upgrade, install a differant OS than the Hp branded bloatware ridden one as shipped with 16 thousand trial/crippled versions or whatever software that is installed that isn't trialware.

There are people out there that:
(A) Are wanting to be able to buy a hd at a decent price.
(B) Want to make more than (1) set of discs )... People that have had their house burn down, OR have the wife, girlfriend, or boyfriend throw the stuff out on purpose. (happens ALL the time)
(My concern over forcing it to do more than (1) set stems from time to time having a bad burn, bad batch of discs that "appear" to be "alright", but at a later date fail.- will not read properly)
(C) Are wanting to do a fresh OS install, and not have some part of an HP program "looking" for that HD "tattoo", not find it, then refuse to work properly.... The program, or programs of course not disclosing the fact that they are refusing to work properly until they "see" the hidden HP marking on the hd you are refering to.

I would assume this is what HP does to "key" a OS restore disc to a particular computer... For example... You and I are room mates.... both have the same PC... Mine gets thrown out, damaged.... You have one, but it won't install, since the install disc is "looking" for that hd watermark /tattoo.

BTW:

Anyone checked on prices of HP stuff? They must think the stuff is made out of solid gold. (really) Check out the Hp PartsSurfer section on HP's site.

You won't find much listed here for the dv8000 series for example since it's "new".. but go back a few model numbers and look at the prices for the ram, the hd's!

While you're there check out how much a replacement screen is, but be aware that you need to be sitting down, and if you have a medical problem you need to have someone there to drive you to the hospital , call for help once you see the prices. (on the screens, the ram, the hd's)

For example for dv1000

14.1-inch WXGA TFT display panel-Only $875.00

100.0GB ATA-100 EIDE hard drive - 4,200 -Only $575.00

1GB, 333MHz, PC2700 DDR-SDRAM Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM)

Get this... ONLY $1150.00

For a dv4000?

Need a hard drive?

100GB Ultra ATA/100 EIDE hard drive - 4,200 -ONLY $ 725.00

Need Ram?

Sure, no problem...

1.0GB memory module kit - Contains two 512MB, 333MHz, PC2700 - ONLY $ 1350.00

Need a display for that dv4000?

17.0-inch WXGA ... Only $941.00

BTW: I think you have to pay tax, and shipping on top of the above prices....

* * * * * *

PS: On the install program, it could be highly compressed, but more than likey it's a case that when you "delete" the QP "program" thru the add/remove function that it removes the "stub" that lets windows "see" the program on the linux partition. Re-installing just re-installs that "stub". That is assuming someone doesn't delete the partition itself...

Same thing for someone who has a HD fail out of warranty... and for some reason choses not to buy a replacement thru hp.

QP should be available for download, you should be be able to type in your ownership info, the reason for needing access, then be sent a (1) use link.
The installer looking for a valid serial number to enable it to install.

Hey... Here's a good deal:

Real-time clock (RTC) battery - CR2032 button style operating at 3VDC

That's a CR2032 .... Only $29.00 !!!!

Compare that to: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

Quickplay partition problem

Hi all,

I'm a new user in this forum and also in the lappy world and I made a mistake.

I've recently got a dv8000t and I didn't like the media center edition. So I installed xp pro. I didn't know about the quickplay partition, so I deleted the recovery, the quickplay linux partition, the os partition and file partition from the windows xp pro cd, I just backup c:\swsetup obviusly.

A few days later, I found out about the quickplay linux partition, but now it has gone. I was wondering if there's a way to recover that partition, so that I could use the quickplay functionality. I've got partition magic, so I could create the 1024 mb quickplay partition size, but what about the linux OS?
What should I do to make it work again?

Thank you all.

Ivan.

There are two folders in the C:\SWSetup folder that reference QuickPlay.

One is QLB:

SP31934-Quick Launch Buttons-
(Search under dv8000t for
Service packs on the HP site...)

Other is:
QPW

On the QPW...

To anyone that has QP 2.0 up and running, that has accces to the 411451-B22 disc...

To see what QPW does.... Go thru the add/remove function in XP, remove QP 2.0. I think this should leave the QP partition INTACT.... That removing QP via Windows just removes it from windows and this QPW "re-keys" /re-installs pointers so Windows can see it again.

Someone please confirm. I think that QPW does not re-create a deleted or damaged QP v2.0 partition... that is what 411451-B22 does for certain select models.

Here's the contents of the C:\SwSetup\QPW folder:

You need both parts for Quickplay 2.0 to work properly. The applications disk only restores Quickplay to be able to boot without going into the OS. The files in the SWSETUP folder allow Quickplay to be played within Windows.

If you don't install /SWSETUP/QPW, you won't have Quickplay functionality within the OS.

OK, I used Norton Ghost 9.o to duplicate my hard drive to an external unit just in case something ever happens. There is a hidden 1028mb partition that you need to copy that contains QP 2 (it's a "boot.ini" app). However, there are also registry and program entries that are in the C: drive. So you probably need both to make it work. Which probably explains the partial boot to Windows. Ugh, complicated. I just hope that if I ever upgrade to one of those new 160gb 2.5" drives that I can clone everything successfully. OR - use the restore discs I created to restore the new drive to "original factory" condition - which better include QP.
