This is stock driver from Asus, no overclock.
Omega Driver w/X1600 don't get 4440, should be around 3990, 4440 is using Omega Driver and overclock with ATI Tool software. Yes I'll try to see how much I can do tonight, I was having trouble installing ATI Catalyst drivers and Omega drivers. Last edited by GenTechPC; 12-05-2006 at 12:36 AM. |

I have the exact same Laptop and all I can say is wow! I had been searching for a replacement for my Toshiba M40X (so sad to see it go) and found so many specs that just didn't meet what I needed - until I seen this in 'What Laptop' - 15.4" with mountains of CPU muscle and power for high spec gaming!
Why is it THAT good? (1) I have a 3.4 GHz workstation for running Virtual PC testbeds at work and this wipes the floor with it! (2) I've just finished Half Life 2: Episode 1 and the X1700 is a great performer. On a PAR with my old FX 53 and an X800. (3) Build Quality is awesome and it's understated looks are much more tasteful than gaudy XPS. (4) The Spec - what can I say - SO much power on tap and 2GB of DDR 2. (5) 17" is too big (not really a laptop) - 14" or less is to small for general desktop use - this is portable, reasonably light, fully loaded and extremely powerful - all the boxes are ticked - makes sense. The perfect laptop - for me perhaps... |

Thanks for the preview. It is a shame that the X1700 is considerably slower than the 7700.

They actually have similar performance on 3Dmark05 both the X1700 and the 7700, but as far as i know, the nvidia 7k series always performed better on 3dmark06 anyways, but its only less than 300mark difference between this model and the G1.
both the G1 and this one seem so nice... darn i wish i had enough money to get a new machine ![]()

I have found a method to install the latest Catalyst driver 7.1 on the x1700 card. Originally this new driver does not seem to be supporting x1700 card, but if you make some changes to the installation files than it is possible to install it for x1700 cards also. Actually this is the same procedure that is followed by ASUS in order to provide us with a driver for x1700, because ATI does not support their own hardware until now. I am uploading the necessary information that allows to do this for a short time here: http://rapidshare.com/files/15087218...x1700_card.rar I don't know how I can upload it to this forum. Maybe Ken you can do it, so it would be available for longer time. Last edited by turbogear; 02-06-2007 at 01:03 AM. |

Sorry for that. I made some mistake when I ziped the file first time. I have fixed the problem already yesterday, but I think I forgot to change the link here. This time the file should not be empty. It's about 12Kb and contains three files plus instructions. Here is the link again: http://rapidshare.com/files/15087218...x1700_card.rar These files should replace some original files in the unzipped folder of ATI 7.1 driver. Please read the instructions that I have provided with the download. Actually what we are doing is just inserting the name of the x1700 into the installation routine and we are installing the driver of x1600. Officially there is no driver for x1700 until now. Asus is also doing this. I was informed about this procedure by ASUS Germany at first, but the file they provided me worked only to install driver and not the new Catalyst control center. I have later found this working solution at a German forum. If you like I can even send you the whole procedure of making the modification to the installation routines. I hope by the next version we would not need to do all these changes. I hope next official version will support x1700. ![]() |

I forgot to tell you that this procedure is for windows XP only. For other windows versions the installation routine has to be modified accordingly. ![]() |

Maybe they should mount GDDR3 instead of cheap DDR2... ![]()

If so, you could overclock memories very high, and obtain at least 5200 at 3DMark05, given the fact that the Acer Travelmate 8200, with a less powerful cpu, could reach those scores...

Strange that this procedure to update driver for x1700 to Catalyst mobile 7.1 did not work for you. I have used the same procedure to install the 7.1 version. I have it installed for two weeks now, and I did not get any problems with that until now. I will dedicate the next post to describe this procedure step-by-step. You can go through the manual procedure. It should work. ![]() |
