My first alien died, but my second is on the way
Hello everyone;
I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that my new Area 51 extreme edition laptop I bought last year, died. I killed it. Not pre-meditated, just accidentally. The two gig memory combined with the 3.2 ghz extreme processor made the latency to high. I tried everything to lower it, and since I build my own desktops, i figured I'd remove a gig of ram and do a "self=fix". Don't ever try this at home. I never had a laptop that had the memory stored under the keyboard like my alien. So I grounded myself (or so I thought) and removed the keyboard and a stick of memory) then when I went to turn it on, it showed no signs of life. Dead as a doornail. I FRIED THE MOTHERBOARD. I new the only thinkg I could do was learn from my mistake and sell the excellent hardware I had configured with it. I got around 900 dollors, (it was a $4,000 dollar lap) then saved up for the new one I'm getting which is in stage 3 at the moment/ I chose the Auroroa m 7700 dual core athlon 60 FX, with clear view screen, 100 gig hardrive 7,200 rmp, two gigs of ram, the r/w dvd cd r/w combo drive, and now I wait and wonder how the performance will be compared to my poor dead extreme edition. Which, by the way,, ran hot and was taken off the market by alienware two weeks after I bought it. It still kicked butt, but now that it's kicked the dust, I hope I can find condolence in my new rig. I'll keep up to par, and tell you the difference or my opionion of the difference between intel and amd. Nice to be back. Astronut ![]() |

I'm sure you'll love the new laptop, but I wonder why you didn't just have the old one repaired?

Why I didn't have it repaired?
Hi;
I became out of warrenty temp. when I tried to take out the memory module myself, without the help of alien tech. They told me to have it checked out and fixed myself then I would be re-instated on my warrenty. I had it checked out by my laptop "doctor" and he said since the motherboard was fried, and it would cost me more than is practical and I'd be better off selling the parts and taking the loss. Anyway, everything happens for a reason, maybe I was meant to have the aurora instead. ![]() |

clevo d900-based laptops are beasts. im sure you'll love your aw. i know my a51 was a cooker wit a 3gh p4 and a 9700pro. my EX7(7700 equivalent) is a lot cooler, but the graphics card port can get a little toasty. enjoy the new rig. oh and will you get the 7900GTX 512 or is aw not offering it yet?

Kudos to Astronut for posting his/her experience - a great reminder to be careful when inside the computer! And nice to see someone admitting a user mistake and not blaming it on the manufacturer.
Best of luck on your new system! |
