Talking Acer Ferrari 5000 and Ferrari 1000(Pics)

The Ferrari 5000 (above) Ferrari 1000 (below) both sport carbon fibre cases and are based on AMD’s new Turion 64 X2 processors but target very different drivers. The 5000 is a relatively portable desktop replacement (364 x 271 x 26.3/38mm and 3Kg) that sports a 15.4in WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) display, a maximum of 2GB DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB VRAM (or up to 512MB using HyperMemory) and a 1.3MP integrated camera. Impressively, an HDMI port with HDCP support is available along with more typical connections such as S-video, a 5-in-1 card reader, WiFi, Bluetooth, 4x USB2.0 and FireWire.

The Ferrari 1000 also sports a carbon fibre case, and is also based on AMD’s new Turion 64 X2 processor, but weighs just 1.55Kg (1.7Kg with a six cell battery) and is a 12.1 incher with 1280 x 800 widescreen display. As you would expect graphics are of the integrated variety (ATI’s Xpress 1150) but can still pack up to 512MB via HyperMemory. 2GB of DDR2 RAM is again the max as is a 160GB HDD. There’s no HDMI here, but the rest of the connectivity is all present and correct, while a second battery can be interchanged with the slot loading DVD rewriter to provide up to five hours of battery life.

Acer, Sponsor of Scuderia Ferrari and the leading vendor in the notebook sector for EMEA – Europe, Middle East and Africa (source: Gartner data, 1Q 2006), presents today the new Ferrari 5000 and Ferrari 1000 series, a family of Acer notebooks engineered to conjugate state-of-the-art performance, finest design and absolute reliability.

The Ferrari 5000 and Ferrari 1000 are the world’s first notebook series to make available to the wide public the exclusive and cutting-edge technology pioneered and perfected in the world of Formula One. The exclusive carbon fiber casing of the Ferrari 5000 and Ferrari 1000 conceals the very latest dual-core technology, defining a notebook that offers all the performance and elegance gained from the alliance between two companies constantly focused on innovation and renowned for pushing the boundaries of technology.

“After almost three years of partnership and successful and innovative notebooks such as the Ferrari 4000 and 3400,” says Gianfranco Lanci, President of Acer Inc, “Acer has designed a truly exclusive notebook range that expresses our firm intention to stay at the forefront of innovation, an ambition that has always characterised both the worlds of Formula One and Information Technology.”

“Technology is essential to achieve objectives”, says Jean Todt, General Manager of Scuderia Ferrari. “We believe that innovation leads to constant evolution, and we are delighted that one of our Sponsors places such importance on the research and development of advanced technological solutions.”

The Ferrari 5000 and Ferrari 1000 are based on the latest AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology. Harnessing the natural power of the latest dual-core technology, the new Acer systems deliver added performance with intelligent power management features. In addition, the new 64-bit architecture delivers leading-edge power and provides a taste of the performance gains promised by future 64-bit applications.

Ferrari 5000
Especially crafted with a thin and light carbon fiber casing – styled in black and in the exclusive ‘Ferrari red’ – this inimitable notebook is equipped to be the technology leader in 15.4" desktop replacement segment.

Performance: the AMD Turion 64 X2 processor delivers the best power output for heavy-application users seeking for a notebook to keep peace with today’s data processing needs.

Communication: coming bundled with the handy Acer VoIP Bluetooth phone, the Ferrari 5000 also exploits the potential of visual communication with Acer Video Conference solution that comprises Acer OrbiCam, a 1.3 megapixel webcamera mounted at the top of the LCD panel. Sporting every kind of wired and wireless connectivity option, it comes complete with WLAN (with Acer InviLink 802.11a/b/g* Wi-Fi CERTIFIED solution, supporting Acer SignalUp wireless technology), WPAN with built-in Bluetooth 2.0 module, LAN connection with Gigabit Ethernet cards and standard connectivity through the integrated 56K ITU V.92 modem.

Storage capacity: the Ferrari 5000 offers a generous HDD (up to 160 GB) and the choice between a slot-loading DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive or the last generation HD-DVD drive**. In addition a card-reader welcomes 5 types of memory cards.

Ferrari 1000
Ideal for those image-sensitive professional users who desire compactness and vanguard performance, the Ferrari 1000 adds style and distinction to everyday’s mobility. Powered with AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, the Ferrari 1000 delivers the best performance output for users longing for an exclusive ultramobile notebook with long battery life. Its 12.1” Acer CrystalBrite widescreen display presents stunning visuals thanks to ATI RADEON XPRESS 1150 chipset supporting up to 512MB Hypermemory.

The Ferrari 1000 redefines the shape of mobile perfection, with sober design and absolute versatility. In 1,7 kilos, it expresses superlative performance and seamless wireless and wired communication, no matter the environment. In addition, the Acer OrbiCam positioned on top of the LCD panel allows real-time face-to-face communication.

All notebook functions can be efficiently managed with Acer Empowering technology, an intuitive interface that gives users easy control over their notebook’s security, performance, settings and communication with a single touch of the Empowering Key.

Both Ferrari series comes with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition or Microsoft Windows Professional Edition preinstalled. Additional installed software includes Adobe Reader, Norton AntiVirus and CyberLink PowerDVD or CyberLink Power Producer, Acer GridVista and Acer Arcade Software Suite.

All Acer notebooks come with a standard 1 year Carry In (International travellers warranty - ITW) which can be extended to 3 years cover with the Acer Advantage service that also covers accidental damage to the notebook.

Wow, the Ferrari 1000 actually sounds kinda' cool.

A little lacking on the video front, but it is more of a ultra-portable.
