Question Cell phone internet... Is there a better way?

I've got the M170 and I Love it to death! Well I go to school and there is no way of me to plug-in to their ethernet ports. If I do I'll get Busted and get kicked out of school. Their strickt about outside connections, Also there is no wifi neather so... I was like !!!. But then I thought "... Wait I have a Sony Ericssson s710a, I'll use that."

I have cingular and the MediaNet package, and I found a way to get the internet to my Cell phone and forword it via bluetooth to my laptop. But i get a speed that is about... no slower than dial-up.

So my question is... Is there a way I can get the speed to increase at all? Or can I buy one of those PCMCIA cards and use it under the MediaNet and not the Wifi. The MediaNet is $20/month and the other wifi anywhere is $60/month. I'm a student need to save 4 books.

I've seen on the Mac that there are scrips out there that you can run to increase the speed 10 fold. Is there anything like that for the PC.

THX

Not sure about cingular...

I have verizon and the E815M , fully hacked. I can use my phone as a bluetooth modem and in EVDO mode I get 400-600KBs, try to beat that

But basically, if they catch you tethering internet you'll get your service suspended, so you have to bump it down to 1x, which STILL gives me CONSISTENT downloads of 200KBs.

Also, the 1x is nearly untraceable by verizon.

Good luck.

What school are you going to that doesn't offer the students access to the internet...

What a sham...

Hope the education is better then the IT department

It's probably still high school, which is understandable.

Almost all the colleges have free wi-fi now...

I would just guess he's in high school, where having internet would only cause the geeky kids to troll the internet instead of paying attention...

No its not High school, Its a small school that deal with computers and all that Mess. I know its stupid that they dont offer it. I can use the schools internet on their computers but they use a firewall called Websence. The school compaired it to being better that wallstreets firewall. i can barly use google as it is so I just wanna know whats faster/better for about the same amount of money... $20/month. Ill buy hardware but $60/month is a grip.

Ugh! Don't even utter that Satanic name! More like WebNONSENSE! My old high school decided to use Websense last year and it is such a annoying program. I know all to well the pain of Googling something only to find the entire first page of results "Websensed."

EDIT: There is a way to get past it if you can slip past Websense and find a proxy server to use. But depending on how strict Websense is set up that can be much easier said than done.

i have the sprint ppc6700 and i can choose to tether using a usb which is quick or if i dont have a usb then i use bluetooth of course using the evdo on sprints network for both... i prefer the speed of the usb.. I forget the speed of the modem but i think i get around 600kb or more... when surfing the net it seems almost as fast as cable modem... Lots of sprint users tether with the 6700 and people have said there is no way for sprint of knowing if you are tether or actually searching on the phones web browser... I use it when traveling, very convenient when I am on the road and I don't want to pay to hotel fees to use the internet.. I just whoop out my phone and hook it up to my e1705 and surf away on the internet. My friend has one of those verizon wireless pc cards which his work gave him and we compared speeds and my sprint ppc6700 whooped his verizon card up. I was suprised my phone was faster than a wireless pc card he was using their evdo network also! I love my phone.

I have the MediaNet Unlimited (19.99/month) plan and so far im not seeing my bill grow... but I've only had the service for like 6 days now. And in my opinion I'm about to lose it. I can't live with 5kps... what am I living in the late 90s (insert stupid joke here)

For the sake of keeping this short...

PPC-6700 is a PDA style cell phone sold by Sprint. There is basically the same thing at Verizon, called the XV6700. Basically through Sprint you can tether with a standard unlimited plan (15 bux a month). They would rather you pay the 40 bux a month plan that allows unlimited tethering, however currently there is no way for Sprint to monitor tethering usage through this particular Audiovox/UTStarcomm phone... Sprint/Verizon both offer PC cards that allow access to the EVDO data network (which has a potential theoretical upper end of 2Mbps) however they will cost you 60 - 80 bux a month for unlimited usage. If you have any interest in switching to a better phone company (ok, better IMO) and want to give Sprint a shot, you can get this phone on Ebay from the seller "SprintNetwork" for like 30 bux after MIR. This of course is with a two year agreement.

Ok... I am stopping here, cause I know I could go on for a long time talking about it all. If you want more information, here are a few links for you to check out. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing!
