Yellow Dog Linux Random Tidbits..

Heh so these are random tidbits I just noticed/found out...

1. Yellow Dog is switching to E17 for its WM. Very cool.
2. Yellow Dog is advertising support for the PS3 on its website. Got no desire to support Sony(Of course buying one and having Sony take a loss is another matter but its still interesting to pay 600 bucks for a cell computer running linux. Not any time soon, Ill wait for the price to drop at least.

Yellow Dog I always found interesting because they took a different marketing strategy than most linux desktop vendors. Instead of supporting all hardware, or trying to, they focused on a specific market, namely Apple computers. I never tried them out, but it was interesting to me as they could tell you exactly what would and would not work, and could focus on tweaking their distro for a set hardware(Much like Mac OS) Will be interesting to see if they continue expanding in the direction of embedded/alternative systems now that Mac is off of PPC.

bigtrouble77 is a n00b, but everyone loves n00bs!
I'm actually interesting in the yellowdog/ps3 deal... The biggest question I have is 'Will there be **good** opengl supported video drivers?' If the answer is yes then the ps3 could be an amazing highend linux pc for only $600. And a great platform for homebrew software.

If not, then the ps3 is just another piece of drm infected sony crap. Seablade, does yellowdog support software repositories?

Not a clue to be honest as I haven't tried it yet. I may give it a whirl on my powerbook when 5.0 gets released as I obviously like E17, and MacOnLinux may provide decent for what else I need, who knows.

Don't forget that Linux on the PS3 is going to be supported through Sony as well(Cause we all want to support them It may be easier than we think to run a standard Gentoo setup or whatever for a set top box.

Then again the moment linux is running on the Wii I will be buying multiple for project things(Set Top Myth Box for playback... Wireless Accesspoint/Router with built in server, etc. I have to wait for someone to hack that one as I doubt I could do it though, especially as standard DVD-Roms may not be supported to start with, I don't know. We know DVD-Video won't be though.

If YDL released a Wii version, I would jump on it in a moment though, they are definitly highly regarded for some time for their PPC based distro from those that have run linux on PPC I believe is what I heard.
