New Info on Headphone Hummmmm.....

I just spoke with my contacts at Dell regarding the headphone hum issue. They DO! have record of many complaints about this issue and they have built a new motherboard revision to hopefully correct this issue.

One problem... This motherboard will not be available for at least 3 weeks. .

At least it sounds like they have found the issue and he told me that this MB revision is specifically for this issue as well as another problem we didnt discuss.

Hope the info helps a bit. Just be patient, the fix is coming!

speaking of headphones. Get a pair of Shur headphones, they cost more than an IPOD but they are amazing. Best sound and they double as a pair of ear plugs, you can't hear anything outside of those bad boys.

When you say motherboard revision, do you mean actual hardware or just a bios (etc) update? Because if they are making a new motherboard that fixes the hum, I doubt they will exchange the motherboards to anyone that complains, or maybe they will.

Lets hope it's a BIOS flash, because I would sure as hell not send my computer in for a mobo replacement just to lose that hum. It doesn't bother me THAT much.

when someone says making a motherboard revision, more than likely they mean a motherboard redesign, not a bios issue. Bios couldn't fix a bad ground problem anyway.

the hum is a physical issue. So I hope everyone has onsite coverage, cause depot service is gonna blow bigtime

Not sure I'd go for removing the mobo myself, that sounds like a LOT of work

Great work! Thanks a lot for the info. For me, the problem is definitely worth getting a new motherboard. I wonder if it will be a complete motherboard replacement or a replacement of the Fan/Audio combo unit. I have suspected that hum is coming from that unit, considering the fan's power, audio out, and mic-in share the same cable and plug.

It really depends on you're tolerance. I do audio production work on the side and the hum to me just drills through everything... but that's just me...

As far as revision, it is a new motherboard. I believe they are addressing the standby heat issue as well with this revision.

And Grey, I will have replaced 4 fans now without losing the hum. the fans dont do the trick.

To greymatter. I have already had Dell send me a replacement fan/audio unit. The hum did not change. The problem is in the design, it is not defective.

hopefully this fixes everything, but I use the mbox for producing music, and even that was effective a little bit. The sound was lowered alittle bit.

I havn't heard a hum yet on my headphone jack. Is it usually heard while music is playing or can it be heard while no other noise is active? Also do you have a link to the heat issue on standby? I have noticed that when I bring my 9100 back from standby that my i8kfangui reports temps in excess of 80C, but it doesn't seem to come down even 1C but when i reboot it starts up around 50C. Is this just a probe problem or is the CPU actually getting that hot? Also who all will be eligable for this new mobo revision?

Acually it isnt that bad. I've come just shy of taking the entire system board out in just 20 min. I've also taken this thing apart well over 20 times.
