As the topic says, what brand is the dvd burner in the Dell 9300?
I have seen some people got NEC and some Sony.. what is correct?
And is the NEC burner a ND-6500?
Thx!

Both are correct, although I don't know the model number for the NEC. and no you probably can't specify which one you want, as usual it's the luck of the draw

I have the ND-6500A, the model for the sony i dont know.

Sony is "SONY DVD +- DW-D65A". Somewhere else on this forum they tracked it down and turns out it's a rebranded Lite On or something like that.

received my 9300, burner is a NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A if that helps

you can check what brand you have by system's specs.

from what I understand is the ND-6500A was replaced by the ND-6650, which is what they ship with now, but the specs seem the same. Newegg used to carry the 6500 and now carries the 6650

Well, if you do get a Sony / don't get an NEC, it's not the end of the world...

It might sound like it though. I've heard (haha) people who have had problems with LOUD Sony drives

Doesn't mean it will always be like this, but, I started with a Sony that got louder and louder then started to fail. They sent me an NEC that was alot quieter and I have not had any problems since.

Good to hear. I really like my NEC 6650A, but I heard Sony reads faster or something? Whatever, I can't tell the difference.

I had the sony and now have the NEC 6500. When I did some (Legal) backups of DVD's the sony did read faster (couple of minutes), but it couldn't burn worth crap. I got my NEC (and realized how LOUD the sony drive was) and was able to burn ~8 Dvd's perfectly. I flashed the firmware on the NEC to take the riplock off, but it didn't seem to make a difference. I might try it again when I have some time. Hope this helps.

Sony drive died within a week.

Called and had it replaced, specifically requested for a NEC.

Amazing eh? You'd think SONY would be a really good drive.

Actually, it's just a rebadge Lite-on. My past experience with Lite-on has been favorable, but any brand can have a flop. I guess Sony picked a crappy model to rebage.
