Apple for Travel / Backup

Thread Starter
This is going to sound horrible, but I'm in the process of buying a "backup" notebook for my PC notebook. Last August I bought a Sager after reading the reviews in the Sager part of the forums. Everyone said they were wonderful - well, mine's been back three times now, and it's quite annoying.

Right now I'm on my desktop, but I'm worried - I'll be in Tokyo for six months in the Spring of 2006, so I am planning on getting a "backup" notebook. I've been looking at the iBooks because they're relatively inexpensive and apparently reliable - and it seems that Apple will replace and repair them anywhere in the world (there are three Apple stores in Tokyo, as well).

How well do they stand up? It will be used for almost constant travel - one of the things it seems that Sagers can't be used for. I'm also looking at the business Dells and HP notebooks. Basically, I'm looking for something small and lighter than 7lbs - but also has enough power to deal with me playing a game once in a while (I don't need the newest things, but I like to look at games every so often). That's why I've been looking at the macs.

Also, how well do they work in a mixed PC/Mac enviroment? How is the sound quality on the iBooks? Will I see a seriously major performance decrease in everyday tasks from my Centrino and P4 systems?

What are your feelings?

One question is, what sort of game are you going to play? Because not all games out there have Mac compatibility, to say the least (there's America's Army and UT2004 and Halo, I believe). The iBooks DO ship with 512MB of RAM, 1.33GHz G4, and a Radeon 9550 now, though, which is farily decent for a low-end gamign machine, I'd hope.

A 12" iBook is a good choice as a travel machine - the portability is great and it's sturdy. True, not all games are available for the Mac - but you will have plenty to choose from, particularly if you are a casual gamer. I've enjoyed the following on a 1.33GHz PowerBook: Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Splinter Cell, Tron, Age of Mythology, Splinter Cell, Call of Duty, and more.

PC compatibility is not an issue, particularly if you are generally hooked to a wireless network. It's a piece of cake to share files. The only drawback I see is the cost of Microsoft Office for Mac if you need that (check to see if you have a Microsoft Employee Purchase Program through work - found I could get Office for Windows or Mac for $30).
