Three Quick Harddrive Questions

Thread Starter
about to preorder my z70va, and I have two quick questions:

1) is a 7200RPM HDD going to be any louder or hotter than a 5400RPM?

2) Which brand is a better, Seagate or Hitachi? Is there any real difference?

3) Any suggestions on a big external harddrive (300GB)? Is there any brand there that stands out?

Thanks.

1. no
2. seagate
3. seagate internal 300GB 3.5" drive ($110 with rebate) + AMS Venus DS3 external firewire enclosure ($50)

thanks, here's a better question - 5400 seagate or 7200 hitachi? both have 8mb buffers, seagate is $60 cheaper.

I'd get the hitachi.

Seagate, as a brand, is a better choice, but in this case, the rpms take priority.

I have the Hitachi 7200k and it is quiet. It gets a little warm but it is not hot.

1) not
2) matter of personel opinion, get the cheaper and faster one.
3) hitachi/maxtor/seagate....doesnt make too much difference. The hitachi is the fastest one, seagate the most quiet of the bunch and maxtor is usually the cheapest (at least at frys).

Well, I've heard of the 5400 100gb Seagate drives having faster access times than the 7200 60gb Hitachis, so who knows? Plus, I don't think there's really a definitive review list of 2.5" hard drives.

Well, according to this comparison of Hitachi notebook 4200, 5400, & 7200 RPM drives, the 7200 RPM drive is measurably hotter than the 5400 RPM drive.
