New graphics card upgrade?!

Thread Starter
If you've read about the sager 8790. then you know about the new ati graphics card. It seems it will be a 9700 pro with - get this- 256mb of memory! CRAZY! I think that this will probably be the new graphics card module upgrade and i think it will give aw a test of wether or not it is true to its word or not! So lets see!

Well the Sager that has the card is scheduled to arrive in January (although it wouldnt surprise me if it didnt arrive until march or so). Anyway, if Alienware is going to offer this card I would not expect them to have it for another half year at least. You are right though that a 256 MB mobile graphics card is pretty insane.

Uhm, Sager doesn't use Alienware's properietary video card modules...

...and it will probably be the 1st upgrade I will make on my AW....whenever it gets here.

When I bought my gateway laptop they thought a 4MB graphics card in a laptop would be insane.

2 years from now it'll be outdated.

That would be the first thing I upgrade on my Alienware also. After that I will upgrade my 512MB of memory to 2GB. Then maybe I will upgrade the processor, if I can. From 2.8GHz to 3.2GHz or faster if possible.

What does that have to do with anything?

Well you posted

And so I corrected it

The 8790 will likely have the GPU on the mobo (IOW, not a module) and moreover not with the Alienware format (unless a seriously sweet thing happened). I wouldn't bet that the module would not be out quickly either, or cheap.

Edit: I thought you were talking about a card "module" rather than the card itself. My bad! Misunderstanding there...

Yeah same here. 9700 Pro is still one of the better desktop graphics cards out right now. A mobile 9700 will be a pretty big step forward in mobile graphics. We are getting to the point where laptops are just as viable for gaming as high-end desktops.

Not a problem. I was trying to make the point that since Sager is usually the first to have new graphics that it should take some time before we see Alienware offer them. If you take the 9600 for example, Sager had them about 2 months before Alienware offered it as an option.
And yes, most likely the Sager will have the GPU on the mobo which is the main reason I got an Alienware.

Just curious... Why does Sager offer new graphics cards ahead of others like AW, Voodoo, etc.?

Well the 9700 is just a 9700 Pro with lower clock speeds and the mobility 9700 will probably have different clockspeeds than both.
