I'd have to say MaximumPCs advice is pretty much crap then...lol, cuz arctic silver works better than just about most thermal pads in the reviews.

Its ability to form to the CPU and heatsink is much better than any pad.

AS does have thermal epoxy tho, which is great for modding video cards with ramsinks.

arctic silver is made of silver so anyone saying a thermal pad will perform better should just check the periodic table and see if what the pad is made of conducts heat as well as silver

On my desktop I noticed a 2-3C drop in Load temperature.

Would definitely be worth it to perform this kind of "upgrade" on any Sager.

Not only will no thermal pad perform better, but no metal will perform better either. Silver has the highest heat conductivity of all metals.

Um, I don't mean to be picky but hey, why not. A periodic table will not tell you thermal conductivity. The periodic table will give you atomic weights.

You will find thermal conductivity in any good chemical engineering or physical chemistry databook.

Edit: table of thermal conductivity of metals. Click on the "metals" tab.

Wait, I thought Gold conducted beter then Silver. I could be wrong.

Nope...silver is the best metal for both thermal and electrical conductivity. You could be thinking of the fact that gold is more NOBLE than silver...only platinum is more noble than gold.

So, I finally did it. First I lapped both the cpu and the heatsink until I could se my reflection in them, I used 400, 600 and 1200 grit sandpaper. Then I applied Arctic Silver 3, as described here, a link MrMsyvc hinted about in another thread. I have only been running my computer for an hour now with this, on artic silvers homepage it says that the cooling will improve during 200 hours. It also says that you shouldnt put it in your mouth, in case you wonder.

Remember, my computer probably isnt representative in measuring the effects because mine was somewhat undercooled before, running a 3.06GHz HT 5660. However it look good, I ran CPU burn for 20 minutes and it reached 66 degrees, compared to 83 before. A sidenote, CPU burn only uses 50% of the cpu according to task manager, probably because of HT, when I fire up another instance to reach 100% cpu, the temp decreases! Anyway, it doesnt seem to have affected the idle temp very much. I tested to run the fans full speed at idle, using my fan control program I havent "released" yet, the temp decreased to 37, compared to 39 before.

Did you clean the surface with alcohol, or something else?

Also, Henrik, I know this is off topic but I will be using your temp monitoring program when my lappy comes in today or tomorrow. Will MBM not work?

No, MBM wont work, thats why I made my program.

I'm really happy with the cooling results, it really made a HUGE difference.

I don't want to start a fight here, but I've read MaximumPC for a long while and I've NEVER heard them recommend against Artic Silver (or ANY premium TIM for that matter) in favor of the pads.

A new quite funny phenomenon I discovered is that because the only thermal sensor in our computers are in the cpu, now when my cpu is cooler the fans are not spinning at full speed anymore while gaming. Guess what happens? The GPU overheats! I have NEVER EVER experienced a crash while gaming before and now it happens after gaming for half an hour, I have my GPU overclocked quite a lot. Lucky me I have the fan control program to set the fan speed to max before I play.

Henrik,

That fan app you're working on does have a fan always on selection right?

Or at least select a medium speed. So you can gear up the fan to cool the system down a bit before even beginning to game.
