On the contrary, many of these types of systems had slide in "cards" to hold CPU, memory, HD, etc. While they didn't have to replace the entire room in these sub degree rooms, they surely had to replace parts and quite often in them from heat related damages with only a small amount of heat that could damage the components and often. Technology for circuits, boards, wiring are no where near what they are today and what we have today will be no where near what we will have to look forward to in the future.

Ok i have to say i have used a laptop for 4 years at college and i don' regret it in the least. Versus a comparable desktop there are advantages.

1. I don't have to go back to my room like the resident students to print stuff out (in my school that can take over half an hour just for the round trip) I have my comp with me I can do my work anywhere even in the middle of the student center quad where we have wireless access too btw.

2. I don't have to wait in line at the comp labs for the few seats they have like the other commuter students. Again i have my comp with me and can print on certain printers all around campus.

3. I don't have to worry about what i did on what computer, it is always on the laptop and always with me. No drive syncing or thumbdrive swapping.

4. My nice powerpoints actually get to be presented without being dumbed down to run on the cheap computers in the labs and classrooms.

5. If i have to look something up real quick inbetween classes it is only a click away anywhere on campus because of the wireless.

6. When the power goes out, my computer still runs cause the battery is basically a UPS.

7. My favorite: Registration priority is at 9am when everyone is in class. As they pile into computer labs after class or run back to the dorms, i sit in lecture on the wireless connection and register at exactly 9am and get all the classes i want at the times i want without missing a second of class or running anywhere.

well all i have to do is put my desktop with a wireless card on a dolly and hook it up to 2 car batteries and i have a wireless computer that i can use to register for classes at anytime. and i just park the dolly in the wheel chair spots in the lecture rooms. i do get looks but i think its because they are jealious of my bitchin setup.

Sorry for reviving an old thread.

In the real world though you would be suprised to find out that many laptops out live desktops for use, this is especially true in companies. I know alot of guys who are still running Pentium 2 and Pentium 3 laptops, but their workstations are P4 based. .....
This argument is moot. I have desktops that could still be running which I built in the late 80's I actually retired a desktop in 2000 that was built in 1980 it was being used almost on a daily basis by my father for letter writing and playing tetris. the reason work places upgrade workstations is not because of broken parts it is because it is more cost effective to provide the employee with a fast machine that can handle the software requirements in the work place, the notebook that is being used from the 90's is being used to write reports and read e-mails most likely on a users own time, if it was on company time, and dime. the user would most likely have an upgraded laptop to keep up with wireless standards, and to run compatible applications with the rest of the office. upgrading every ones desktop is a third if not quarter the price of upgrading a company's laptop fleet this is why they hold a longer life in terms of usage, but they do not last longer.
