Go 6800 Ultra in 9300?

Is it possible to put a Go 6800 Ultra into a 9300? I've only heard fleeting apocryphal stories about it happening, I'm not sure if it's just cost that's preventing people from doing it, or if it's physically impossible.

If it is, does anyone know if Dell is planning on introducing upgrades to the Go 6800 at any point in the future, or if we're stuck with it, despite it being a discrete, replacable component? Thanks!

EDIT: Oh, and one more question: Putting AS5 on my GPU. Does this void my warranty? And how much does it lower the temps by?

Yes its possible. You will need the following:
9 cell battery
Modified 9300/XPS bios
XPS2 power brick
Ultra card with heatsink.

Can anyone corroborate/refute this? How much does the Ultra cost?

No, he is making it all up... lol, j.k. That is what you need to do it, as far as cost.. I think someone bought one for approx $350 or so w/ coupon but I can't remember to well.

According to the 9300/XPS2 FAQ it is possible. However, the Ultra uses 2 heatpipes as opposed to the 9300's single heatpipe. The 2nd heatpipe on the Ultra interferes with the chipset heatpipe in the 9300.

I too am curious about adding a better thermal paste (in my case ceramique) will void the warranty.

Oh btw, I believe u have to remve/ change the northbridge cooler as well as the ulta's 2nd heatpipe runs over it... can someone confirm. As far as applying AS5 or another thermal compound, yes it will void your warranty if that soecific part (video Card) broke because it can be attributed to improper mishandling, etc. BUT if thats not the part that broke, they wouldnt even look. I also wonder if they would actually even look at the cooler for the gpu if it broke, I think time wise they would run some software or typical troubleshooting steps and then just replace the card. Cant say for sure though as I dont work there.

Is there any kind of site that has a tutorial/information about the northbridge heatpipe without me having to open up my system? How hard is this upgrade to do? I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought about doing this.

You will have to open up the system no matter what, as far as how hard... cant say as I havent done it but if you have basic comp knowledge it wont be all that hard.

Edit, perhaps this link will help http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...300+6800+ultra
