I own a Dell M60 notebook and I m running out of USB connector.(Max 3) My external HDD require 2 USB connection as 1 of the usb for additional power for HDD. I found out that beside one of the usb, they is another type of connector. The symbol look like dc power connector. Anybody know what type of connector is this and the name?

Copied from the specs on dell's website:

* Serial (DTE): (one) 9-pin connector; 16550-compatible,16-byte buffer
* Parallel: (one) 25-hole connector (unidirectional, bidirectional, or ECP)
* Video: (one) 15-hole connector and S-video out connector
* Infrared: one port compatible with IrDA Standards 1.1 (Fast IR) and 1.0 (Slow (R)
* Audio: microphone-in-jack; stereo headphones/speakers jack
* 2 USB 2.0 compliant connectors
* Docking: 280-pin connector for the Latitude D/Port-Family, Advanced Port Replicator, or D/Dock-Family Expansion station
* IEEE 1394 (one) 4-pin connector
* Dell D/Bay (one) USB 2.0 connector for use with Dell D/Bay external media module
* Modem: RJ-11 port
* Ethernet LAN: RJ-45 port

I would guess and say it's the bolded one.

The above makes use of Dell's proprietary D/Bay connector.

Its a power connector for Dell external optical bays.

Thanks guys. I m thinking to mod the connector to get the dc supply for my external HDD. So I can free up 1 of my usb. So I don't think I can buy the connector from market since it is a special type for dell modular only.

That would be a neat idea!!

The bottom part of the D-Bay connector is a regular USB. You can just plug a regular USB cable into the bottom and it works.

If you want to be fancy, you can buy a dbay off of dell's website, along with one of the swappable hard drive modules for a 600m/8600/D600/D8600/whatever and then use it as your removable hard drive.

You could see about modding a plug to fit in to the upper portion of the dbay connector, as it does output voltage, but if all you need is to be able to plug in a mouse while you have your external hard drive plugged in which requires 2 USB connectors, then don't bother, just use the one on the dbay.

Do I6000s have these?

I should check mine.

AFAIK, Dell's newer notebooks no longer use these self-powered proprietary ports...

I would like to mod the plug to fit in the upper portion of the dbay connector. But I don't no the dbay connector connection. I mean which pin is dc supply and the pole. I use external HDD (2 usb) and the wireless mouse together (1 usb). The M60 only have 3usb include the dbay side. But than when I want to connect others device, I don't have anymore USB.

I am not certain, but I believe the Latitudes do. The Inspirons haven't from what I remember.

I'm not sure if it's detachable but if it is you can purchase that cable for the external d/bay (pic above). It has a male d/bay connector on one side.

I think the cable is attached to the D-Bay external module.

Couldn't find the part number. Best call dell spare parts and see if it can be purchased individually

Now I try another way. I have order an internal modular bay for HDD without the HDD. When arrive, I just put in my existing HDD and hot swap the DVD burner. Free up my 2usb.
