Photo/video on an M70?

First off, thanks to all who have posted in the past; I've been reading this forum for a while as part of my becoming-an-educated-consumer research and I've found answers to many questions already.

Would it be crazy of me to purchase a Dell M70 to be used as an on-the-go video (Premiere Pro) and photo (Photoshop CS) editing machine? It seems like this computer has the power to run both programs easily, but most forums/reviews I read recommend the Inspiron 9300 for this purpose. It's almost like the M70 barely ever receives a nod even though it will perform just as well as the 9300. Is there a reason it is overlooked so frequently? Am I missing something?

BTW, I considered purchasing the 9300 until I saw it in person - it's hugemongous. A 17 inch screen sounds good on paper, but in reality, it's way too big to be frequently mobile. Any user experience or other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi rytard,

I have a 9300 myself (geat machine, but you are right about the size; huge) and ordered a M70 for video editing. We use premiere 6.5 with a group of 4 persons (we pass it through to each other). Therefore we wanted a mobile solution (the 9300 is less mobile). The M70 has the same processor power as the 9300. The quadro is less powerfull as the 6800, which is not a problem at all since premiere does not use this videocard power.
In my opinion the M70 is more reliable build and more mobile. As soon as i receive my M70 and used it, i will let you know how it works.

Greetings

M70 ordered: 2.13 GHz, 1GB RAM, 80GB 7200rpm HDD, WSXGA screen.
(I hope you understand my english, as you understand it is not my home lanuage)

First off the quadro isn't less powerful, at least in terms of actual chip. It is clocked slower, which you can change and it'll be like the 6800. The quadro 1400go is the 6800go clocked a tad slower and with drivers that are tweaked to be more precise in their calculations.

I have an m70 and love it. Although I don't love the intel 2915, everything else is great on it. I decided against the 9300 for the same reasons, size, but also because I do DCC work and the quadro is the way to go with it.

I believe the reason it doesn't get as many nods is one, people don't know about it 'cause it isn't harped upon like everyone does with their 9300s and xps2s. But also, the reason people harp on those is that Dell very often sets out great deals for those computers. I was lucky enough to get the m70 during a 35%, as otherwise I would have gotten the 9300 or perhaps the asus or acer. It is a tough call at its normal price.

hope that helps,

Tellerve

Thanks for the responses folks. You've given me the confidence I need to hold off on the current 9300 discount offer (40%) and wait till the M70 has a discount. I definately think the M70 is the way for me to go; now I just have to wait for it. Luckily, I have the patience to wait because I know it could be a long time.

On another note, I'm eligible to purchase from Dell through their employee purchase program, but I've discovered the M70 is not discounted in the program. bummer.

Sorry Tellerve,

You are right. I do not overclock myself and therefore I said the quadro is less powerfull. But again, you were right.

Question: does overclocking make the quadro less stabile ? probably depends on how much overclock, so how much can you overclock before it comes less stabile ? (is instabile a good english word ?)
