guide to make the play button launch media player - Page 2

...weird..... How come it doesn't load Window Media Player, PowerDVD, VLC, when I hold on the play button? But When I shutdown the notebook or hibernate/standby while holding on the play button Window Mediaplayer , PowerDVD, and VLC would load up fine. What am I doing wrong here?

the path to media center is C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe - if that helps

I just reinstall Media Direct and that solve the problem. Don't know why it didn't let me launch it on window mode before. Well now everything run fine. Thanks

hmmm ok will work on that over the weekend when I got some spare time....... the main problem here is that I don't have MCE and so you MCE people might have to figure it out on your own. it may work if you look at the origional registry file that I am hosting and figure out the necessary modifications for mce... after you have modified the registry you will need to download the DMX.exe that i am hosting and RENAME IT TO ehshell.exe then put it in the windows media player directory and let me know what becomes of that...

Windows may not let you set a default path for MCE since it's kinda integrated into windows.

would this make Media Center unusable?

umm yeah it will disable MCE...

Ok so i didn't get an answer, so i'll ask it again.. When i run Dell Media Experience, it's not called dmx.exe.. the program that is run is PCM2.exe (PowerCinema). It says Dell Media Experience in the program, however.. I have a brand new 9300, just wondering if anyone else sees this. It looks like the program that runs it when the front panel buttons are pushed is pcmservice.exe.

Anyone else see this? Do i have some newer version of dmx??

Thanks

This is a great idea, but it does not work on my 9200. But I don't think it is due to any failure in your files.

I first tested the button before making any changes. A popup said I had missing files in C:\ and asked if I wanted to remove them from the library. I said no since it did not say what files were missing. Since then, pessing the button does nothing except occasionally I see an hour glass and some hard drive activity. Quickset is installed and running - checked the system tray to be sure. I rebooted but still nothing. When Windows Media Player is open, this buttons work fine. The Volume controls always work.

I have a FireFox extension called Foxy Tunes loaded that gives player controls in the FF interface. While this extension worked, I did not use it so I uninstalled it. That did not help so I reinstalled Quickset and Dell Media Experience hoping to reset the functionality of the play button. So far I have not had any success in getting the play button to launch any application.

I reloaded the FF extension Foxy Tunes 1.1.1 and I can use the buttons provided I have FF open and use the Foxy Tunes controls to start the player. Foxy tunes can hide the player and it can control a slew of other players. This is all great for someone without the controls we have but I wish I could get the play button to work the way it shoud and not only when I have FF open. If I had known about the 2 second trick I never would have loaded this extension.

It seems that Foxy Tunes has done something to undo what Quickset provides. Any suggestions?

What i REALLY want to know is why did Dell decide against programing the quickset launch to be customizable? They have had customizable hotkeys and buttons in the past. Why miss out on this kind of feature now?

I think it was a bad call on their part. On par with the lack of a built-in mic in the 9300/XPS architecture.

I cant seem to make this work. I am trying to make this work for foobar2000. I have win. XP, so that isint the issue. I have renamed the registry file to this:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\DMX.exe]
@="C:\Program Files\foobar2000\\DMX.exe"
"Path"="C:\Program Files\foobar2000\\"

and I have renamed forbar2000 in program files to DMX.exe. What is wrong here?

AHHH YOU FORGOT SOME DOUBLE BACKSLASHES!!! it should look like this.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\DMX.exe]
@="C:\\Program Files\\foobar2000\\DMX.exe"
"Path"="C:\\Program Files\\foobar2000\\"

as for the 9200 owner that posted a couple of posts back... you should try to download the version of quickset that was released for the 9300 and maybe that will do the trick. You might also check the registry for traces of the plugin that where left behind when the program was uninstalled. so far this trick has only been confirmed on the 9300 and xps2 and so it may not work with a 9200.

I went to the Dell download pages and compared the QuickSet for the 9200 and 9300, and they're the same program.
Does this mean the 9300 instructions should work with my 9200?

Well I downloaded the reg file, and copy and pasted what you put in above, and get an error message saying that " Cannot import Coc......( the reg file) The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

Huh?

And i just changed the Foobar 2000 icon in program files to "DMX" is that all i needed to do there?
Thanks ozzlo, I searched the reg and did not find any trace of the firefox extension. I also checked dmx and found all of the references to it only by the dell media experience program.

I did try another idea, defining a shortcut key. I noticed that when checking the properties for a shortcut, if you are in the shortcut key field and press the play button, it shows up as Ctrl + Alt + G. This however did not work. Then I tried something off the wall, Ctrl - Shft - Alt + F12. This did work. Not that I would want this combination, but it did prove that Media Player would launch through a shortcut key.

I reset the shortcut key for media player to Ctrl + Alt + G using the play button to enter the key combination. Thinking something is capturing that play button, I uninstalled media experience, and the quickset program and rebooted. Still no luck I tried pressing the Ctrl + Alt + G keys instead of the play button, this did indeed launch the player.

So Windows recognizes the play button as a Ctrl + Alt + G key press, but something must be intercepting it before it can launch the player, I just don't know what.

If anyone else does get this to work on a 9200 I would like to know. Maybe this trick won't work on a 9200, but if someone does get it to work, then maybe it is my configuration and I can try it the next time I wipe and reload.

you can't copy and paste the reg file directly into the registry. you need to download the registry file by rightclicking and selecting save as. then you need to edit the file to do the instructions that you want... change the path from windows media player to foobar.

then after that You run the registry file...

You don't copy and paste it manually into the registry for some reason it just dosen't work that way i'm not sure why.

also you need to keep the very first line of text in the .reg file otherwise it won't add the information correctly. if it still dosen't work then you got a syntax error somewhere.

Sweet, it works now. One question I am almost sure you wont know, when foobar loads, it is maximized across the whole screen. Know if there is any way to make it load un-maximized?

you will need to make a default window size for that (there should be a way to do it in the registry). because when you launch with the play button the old dmx.exe starts maximized. it's the quickset program which maximizes the window...

I find this freeware app to be indispensable....

AutoSizer automatically resizes any window you specify. Using AutoSizer, you can set windows to automatically maximize [or center, open to a specific size, etc.] every time they’re opened. It works with almost any program.....

I couldn't get it to work here, followed the directions to a T. However I should also say, and ask for help, the volume buttons won't raise and lower the volume so it may very be something with that control panel. The blue lights come on, but nothing happens. I've already re-loaded the Sigma-Tel, Quickset and Dell NSS drivers. Anything else you can think of that's keeping those from working. Heck, my Fun+(page up) or (page down) doesn't do anything with the volume. Can't figure it out.
