Acer Disassembly

Ugh. I've broken the AC connector on my Ferrari 4000, and desperately need to get in to fix it.
I've taken out every single screw I can find on the bottom of the case, but I can't seperate the top from the bottom - it seems to be joined at some point in the centre.

If it helps, it's looks to be roughly the same case as the Travelmate series, especially the 8100. A tech manual or something would be great, but just a "you need to do this" would be of enormous help, too.

Anyone help? Pleeeeeeeeeeease.

You've probably already done this, but check under any stickers or anything that are on the bottom...companies like to hide them there. Also, check inside the ram area and any other panels that u can take off.

Sorry if that didnt help

If you don't mind me asking, how did you break the AC Connector?

Mine plugs in very tight and is always a pain to get out.

On the 3400 you need to get in from the top by removing the keyboard and maybe the screen also. There is a Service Guide for Ferrari 3200 somewhere on the net. Can't remember where, but if I found You can. It has detailed pictures and everything.
Good luck!

Ferrari Dark - Well it fell from my desk and landed straight in the AC connector with it in. With that amount of impact right on it, I guess it was just too much.

Tabusheikh - I've checked everywhere for hidden screws under labels, but nothing

kej - under the keyboard seems the moost logical place, thanks. I'll have a look for that ferrari 3200 service manual. Fingers crossed.

I had a dell adapter with a broken wire. I had to use a saw to open it. Afterwards I had to put it back together with tape, but it worked. Otherwize I recommend you by an unoriginal PSU. I have one that accepts various tips so i can connect all sorts of laptops, including my new ferrari 4000 to it.

It's not the AC cable itself, it's the connector inside the laptop itself. The cable itself is undamaged and working, but the laptop isn't taking power from it.

You need to take off the keyboard - there are screws under it. The keyboard has some sort of flaps at the upper edge, you'll need to use plastic screwdriver to pop keyboard out. I'm not good at explaining it but you might figure it out yourself.

Thanks guys, I'm in!

Two dozen or so exterior screws, and another 7(!) under the keyboard - damn someone at Acer has a screw fetish.

Now I just have to fix the actual problem. Still, I did it with my Loox, I don't see why my Ferrari should be any different. Now... where's that soldering iron.

That's what it takes to make the plastic case feel solid enough

Yeah I know. It's just a pleasant surprise coming from a Dell that seems to be held together with rubber bands and a whole lot of luck.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeey it worked. My Ferrari is now sucking in that AC power like there's no tomorrow.

A few observations on internal build quality, though. Generally the internals look top notch, with wiring etc at a minimum. While I'm no mobo designer, it doesn't take a genius to spot a well put-together bit of kit.

However... the part that broke for me (the AC connector) I would have one issue with. This is a rough diagram of how the connector itself attaches to the PCB. -ve connections marked with a -, +ive connections marked with a +. See if you can spot the resiliency problem...

Code:
              - -
          ===============================
     p | |
     l | |
     u | |
     g | |
          | |+
     s | |
     i | |
     d | |
     e | |
          ===============================
              - -

                                  -
Yeah, and guess which one single connection out of all 6 broke?

Still, that won't be a problem who don't go dropping it I guess
