occasionally when i have the mouse plugged in (USB) my scroll under my touchpad doesn't work while web browsing. However, the scroll on my mouse works during these time. Sometimes, though both scrolls work. Finally, never have both not worked at the same time.

i think i may have fixed it by reinstalling the drivers from sagers website. iunno... let me know how you fixed it.

Having messed with this a little on my 8890 (which is at the shop for a mobo swap), I can give a little insight. The touchpad scroll button will not work unless the official touchpad software is installed. The touchpad software will disable just about every feature (scroll buttons, etc..) of both mouse *and* touchpad if you plug a PS2 port mouse into the PS2 port. It really hates that. A usb mouse is the only way to get both scroll wheel and touchpad scroll button working at the same time.

One caveat about the touchpad software. It kind of has a few problems, nothing major, but to me the worst is that if the touchpad software is installed, the setting for "how many lines at a time should the attached mouse wheel scroll" is not remembered across boots. It is always set back to 1. I really hate that. I like to have the scroll wheel scroll 3 lines at a time. Luckily, Mozilla Firebird allows me to override that for web browsing, so all is not lost!

I had the same problem and got rid of the touchpad drivers. As soon as the drivers are fixed, though, Im installing them again to get the scroll thing to work and to get the nifty touchpad shortcuts (useful when an external mouse isnt around).

Yep mine doesn't save how many lines to scroll either. I even installed the software from my microsoft mouse and it still doesn't save it. Its pretty annoying and I've chalked it up to the touchpad drivers sucking. My scroll button on the touchpad only works when it wants to, and stops working for now apparent reason also. I have used it on a page, get half way to the bottom of the page and it will stop working and I'll need to scroll the rest with my mouse. I blame the touchpad drivers for this too.

I did a little googling regarding this "feature". There is a fair amount of dissatisfaction with the Synaptics software in general. If you go to their site, the "support" section is pretty grim and teeny. The answer to most questions is: uninstall the Synaptics software to return your system to normal! LOL!

Ah, well.. For the time being I am leaving the Synaptics software installed. I do use the touchpad a bit and need the features it gives, period. When I sit down to a full mousing day, I open the mouse panel and change the stupid scroll lines back to 3. *sigh*

I guess it would be possible to use a macro program to automate the opening of the panel and changing of the setting, but what a hassle for such a stupid thing!

Yeah, man, it ticked me off so much I had to get rid of it, dispite all the good features.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Mine works flawlessly.

Ok my setup:
8890-V with XPP + SP1 + all current patches.

Logitec USB optical wheel mouse Model # M-BJ58
Logitec driver: 9.42.0.0 dated 22/10/2001
Mouse Driver details:
LHidFlt2.sys - 9.42.1.10 (logitech)
LKbdFlt2.sys - 9.42.1.5 (logitech)
LMouFlt2.sys - 9.42.1.26 (logitech)
mouclass.sys - 5.1.2600.1106 (microsoft)
mouhid.sys - 5.1.2600.0 (microsoft)
LColnst.dll - 9.42.54 (logitech)

Synaptics driver: 7.5.5.0 April 2003
(as per latest on Sager's website)
If you want the details let me know as there are quite a few files.

I have my wheel mouse set to 3 rows, the scroll function in the touch pad works as does the hyper accelerate mode of the Logitech mouse (don't touch my mouse too much as the cursor will fly off the screen ).

From memory you have to load the Synaptics driver first then the mouse driver because the Synaptics driver overwrites a few registry settings.

Umm.. aussie.. would you mind filling me, at least, in on how one "orders" driver loads? I am afraid you have got me there. I have no clue what you are talking about. I don't see any place to control the driver "ordering" in WinXP.

Edit: One thing I will mention is that I am not using any additional mouse drivers. just the defualt ones that came with XP. I also have a Logitech mouse. Maybe I should try the logitech drivers? I usually stay away from all 3rd party drivers in XP if I don't need em..

Hi eludwig.

You are correct that there is no way to order driver loads in XP. Drivers for hardware (with the exception of the ATA or RAID disk drivers) are always loaded after XP is loaded. It is only after XP is installed with its default drivers, that I load the Synaptics drivers from Sager's website.

Once the Synaptics drivers are in, I then load the Logitech mouse drivers from Logitech's web site.

This way the Logitech drivers overlay the Synaptics defaults which overlay Microsoft's defaults. If you don't install either set of drivers then you are stuck with Bill's original set.

You have to be aware that these are not really 3rd party drivers (say like the Omega drivers are for the ATI cards). These are drivers supplied by the device manufacturer to optimally control their device. Microsoft can only provide minimal functionality for the lowest common denominator of hardware. I would highly recommend you install the drivers from the manufacturer as they do work (certainly in my case).

aussie,

Thanks for the info.. I do believe I will try the logi mouse drivers when my unit gets back from Sager. I will post back here to let everyone know the result.

Interesting stuff, aussie. I also try to stay away from drivers I dont need. (As you may have seen on my Info & Benches page,) I have a USB MS Optical Wheel Mouse. When I tried using the touchpad drivers, they gave me the whole scroll resetting thing so I got rid of them. I never tried installing the Intelli software for the MS mouse since I didnt think it would be useful (its a standard two-button wheel mouse; I didnt spend an extra 20CDN on the Explorer one). So yeah, I might try installing both the touchpad and MS drivers the next time I happen to reinstall XP, but for now I am not gonna touch it: don't fix it if it ain't broke . Meanwhile, if anyone can tell me if the MS Intelli drivers fix the scroll reset issue like the Logitec ones do, your post would be appreciated.

So Nape', didja get it fixed? It's OK to be n000b and I agree with ya totally, you paid plenty and it oughta work. My 8887 works fine on both touchpad and Intellimouse Optical 3.0. I had a problem when I first bought it last February, but drivers and BIOS updates fixed that. I don't think any other models have had that problem since. Basically, you want to get the Synaptics drivers installed for the touchpad, and whatever drivers there may be for the mouse (some are in XP, some mice come with extra). Your user manual should explain driver installs. Let us know if you're still having trouble.

I have a MS Intellimouse optical. I tried all sorts of installing/uninstalling of the Synaptics and Intellimouse drivers as well as playing with registry keys with regedit. Couldn't get it to work (kept resetting back to 1 line scroll). From what I read through googling, the MS drivers do not get along with the synaptic drivers at all.

Then I read on Logitech's site that their drivers will work with the Synaptics drivers if you install the Logitech mouseware drivers after the synaptic drivers. So I went out and bought a MX500 (awesome mouse) and it still doesn't work. I'm running the Mouseware 9.78 drivers. Since I don't use the advanced touchpad features I ditched them in favor of the Logitech drivers. I'll patiently wait for something to be fixed although Synpatics has known about this issue for a long time now since even their older drivers had the same problem.
