XPS Gen2 Arrives today. Need help with Overclock and reformat

Thread Starter
My XPS Gen2 arrives today!! I nailed this bitch with the 40% off coupon and 2% of using DPA with no interest til 2007!! FTW.

I am looking to totally clear the HD from all the dell garbage and reformat.. no issues there. Im looking to get a comprehensive list of all the most current software and driver version I will need to overclock.

I will prolly add some AS5 to the cpu and GPU also. I play with an Athlon 64 and an ATI X800 XT PE on my desktop PC, so all this eveil empire Nvidia and Itel is very foreign to me. thanks in advance!

Congrats on the deal.

Overclocking and formatting have been discussed several times in the Dell 9300 / Dell XPS 2 forums. Try searching.

Yeah, I remember seeing someone had wrote up a quick overview guide on what to do and how to do it.

most important is to install NSS (notebook sys software) and intel chipset first...
The NSS doesn't do anything that your average Windows update wouldn't fix does it?
I mean, as long as you don't have this 3,5" floppy USB drive... which I dont.

And ehm... what if you already did most of the installing.. would it have any effect to install it AFTERWARDS? Or am I fubar and need to start from scratch?

from 3 different techs on XPS support "install NSS first because it does a variety of things"...

I'd call em up...

but i've always wondered this, if it has to be installed first, then how do NSS updates work?

I installed NSS last. I was just going to leave it off but I liked the little sun guy when I changed the screen brightness along with the on screen volume indicator. Other than these types of functions and power management in the form of quickset, what does NSS do?

i don't have a clue lol... just know that the xps techs told me it did "several" things to the system... i've asked about it just about every time i call the xps line and the tech will say "oh yeah"... so i assume it is important... obviously more than just QS, vol ctl, etc...

this is the desc from the Dell download site "Notebook System Software (NSS) is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating system. Install the NSS program to gain support for Dell 3.5-inch USB floppy drives, Intel Pentium-M processors, CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives, Infrared (IR) communications, and USB devices. NSS is necessary for correct operation of your Dell portable computer, including the Dell D/Bay, D/Dock, D/Port, and D/View family of docking devices. NSS automatically detects your computer and operating system and installs the updates appropriate for your configuration."

Maybe it just contains Dell's spyware utilities? That would explain why they're so vague about NSS' functions.

ROF LMAO!

btw, speaking of spyware, MS's Anti Spyware beta is very good, you should dl it... i don't think you can have too much anti spyware, malware, etc.

A Dell rep saying anything 'for sure' kinda means the opposite considering all the crap they tell people. Reps hardly know anything other then what their monitor says.
not a Dell rep... an XPS special support TECH... and several of them... the only thing they disagreed on was the install order... two said NSS first then Intel, one said no diff as long as they are the first two...

i'd appreciate some other XPS owners callin' the line and seein' what they say to you...

that's one thing we have on our side here, a lotta owners...

btw, it takes about ten days after you get your xps for your exp srv code to auto route you to the xps support...

You dont need the NSS at all. It is not on mine and is not needed unless you want functional dell software.
Kinda sounds like its there just for updating things if you auto update. If you dont do that then it probably isnt that important.

Dude, you havent even gotten your system yet, with the XPS you are getting an 6800 Ultra card yes?? Why the need to overclock?? Unlike desktops thermal considerations are critical in laptops due to the confined area of the components.

I just finished a reformat and making boot disks (runs so much faster and it's nice and clean!) haven't bothered installing NSS though, doubt it will be a problem.

If you're a gamer or a die hard Tweaker, modding and OC'ing is the way to go, be it laptop, car or wife
post #19 of 19
Some people do like to OC their systems and companies are making it easier to do nowadays.

thegad,
Did you have any problems with the reformatting? I know years ago reformatting used to be a PIA but nowadays its generally easier if you have all you need at hand. I'm curious how smooth it is with Dell's notebooks. What kind of time length did it take generally speaking?
