Ibook or Powerbook?

Hi everyone!
I know you get lots of these "advice" posts...but I really need some opinions!
Well, I know that I want to transfer to Apple world, and I need a notebook as I am starting school and will be taking it EVERYWHERE with me, and am pretty much set on having a 12" cuz of this.

SO it boils down to an ibook or powerbook...I am a musician and don't really have much experience with recording or audio editing. But i really want to get into it, mostly my own stuff. Quality wise - I would like something that would maybe be sufficient for a decent demo. I'd mostly be recording vocal, guitar, and possibly some keyboards. I heard that recording vocals esp. would be laggy on an ibook, but others say it'll be alright. Also, what software would be sufficient and what else would i need? (i know an audio interface or whatnot)....i'm just pretty much lost right now.

I look forward to your opinions. Thanks so much to anyone who wants to enlighten me on this topic!

You might want to have this moved over to the Apple section of the site. You are going to (most likely) hear nothing but anti apple sentiment over here.

As for your question, if you are serious about your editing and whatnot, I would definately sugest that you go with the powerbook. You should be ok with the iBook, but you willl want all the power that you can get.

And just ignore any pointless pro windows banter that you might see here.

Who will suggest an even more expensive option to the poor guy, e-hooligans?

Unfortunately, I have no experience with audio editing in order to give a responsible and qualified advice to you.

In view of the comming switch to Intel in Q1 2006, there is no much sense to invest to the
powerbook. An iBook for less than 1k$ may be sufficient for you as a starting point.

I also don't know which platform, mac or windows, is actually better and more cost effective for your audio editing job. You should ask somewhere else.

Well, Apple's new line of iBooks has dropped in price and slightly upped the specs. So now, the Powerbook is, like the name suggests, more powerful than the iBook. Personally, I love the Titanium look of the Powerbook, but that's just the aesthetics...

Powerbook in my opinion. If you are serious about music I would say stick with apple, they do well in that department and unless you need something on Windows that you cant get on a Mac there isnt much reason to go elsewhere in my opinion for most people.

And when discussing laptops there isnt much difference between buying a PPC based one now and a x86 one later really, neither will be upgradeable compared to desktops, and what will be upgradeable(Memory) wont change. Laptops are hardly upgradeable and one of the points Mac has been making is that they specificly have made sure most things are cross platform compileable on the Mac OS so I doubt youll run out of support for it anytime soon.

Well, to be fair though, the x86 processors are apparently speed demons compared to the current PPC line. Something to keep in mind, especially since they're going to be rolled out next year...
