Just below the screen, little hole is the microphone...funny when I think you guys did not find it :P
It's right in the moddle but it just does not say what it is and I found it so practical!

I have a 9200 also and only just realized a few weeks ago that there was no microphone. Even dug into the manual to be sure I wasn't just missing it somehwere. I am very interested in any details and photos you have of the mod when you are done. I build compouters but I am always nervous about opening up one of these while in warranty. I cannot understand why Dell woudl drop this fetaure, especially with VoIP and other technologies becoming more common place.

The counterproductive thing is, the people who you alienate with statements like this are the people who may have otherwise responded.

I used to read the forum several times a day, but I've just moved to Brazil and I won't have regular connectivity for a while. Of all the new threads since I last checked the forum a few days ago, yours was one of the few that I opened. While I'm still interested in the origianl content because I was just lamenting the absence of a built-in mic on my XPS the other day, some of your posts have sort of spoiled my desire to get involved. (But not completely, because I understand your frustration.)

I'm definitly the "XPS Type": I love games, I want the best performance I can get without getting ripped off in the process, and I don't care what anyone thinks regarding the way my laptop looks. (And that goes both ways. I don't care if kids think it looks cool, and I don't care if a suit thinks it looks silly.)

As for your project, you might want to look into a noise-canceling mic as well. I use a headset with one and it makes a huge differece. (People can't hear the air conditioner in the background when I talk to them.)

I went into Radio Shack looking for mic elements, and they had zip! (-They used to be cool! )
Now it looks like ifI want a decent mic I may have to "harvest" it from something like a headset as you describe.
It'll be a while before I wanna chomp into my laptop again. At least by then this thread will be buried. Congratulations on being a mature XPS owner. I guess this is gonna keep on keepin' on, huh?
I stand by what I said regarding the intended market for the XPS, as well as my belief that the XPS should've had it's own section, and the 9x00s should have shared a seperate section.

I always found that Raido Shack carries what I need, but will nearly ALWAYS be out of it when I need it. I kid you not; that really seems to be a pattern with me. Bastards.

It would be pricy to cut into a headset and find out the mic won't fit into the laptop chassis.

Don't worry about stepping in a bit of crap; it'll scrape off.

I've been searching the threads for just this. I have an i9300 and want to integrate a mic into. I'm up for the challenge to pull the board and and solder. One thing though, I want the internal mic to kick off when I insert an external one. I guess this is called opening the circuit to the internal mic? Obviously you can tell I don't know enough about circuits and such.

Gold Beater, do you have a wiring diagram of some sorts that was going to allow such a thing or anyone else?

I just modded the 9400 synaptics touchpad into my 9300 and now I'm mod happy!

Thanks

Well, I've been trying for a while to get into that little black box on the underside of my laptop which houses the mic in/hphone out (due to a broken laptop jack) and it seems damn near impossible. But if you can, this mod could be a snap. I would recommend setting the mic unit itself as far from the fans as possible. The low-frequency hum can be dealt with using a hardware crossover on the leads of the mic unit to cut the lows, but it would only probably cause a boxiness to the mic's sound. Using the mic from another laptop would make the most sense, or even finding a usb-powered mic and stripping the guts and laying it into the laptop might even be better as long as there isn't too much headwork and a simple internal usb connection is available. Anyone? I've got my mic setup tied into something a little more "external" so I'm set but this would be a nice mod for the road for stuff like, as the original poster stated, recording silly stuff to add to emails.

Seems worthy of a nod,

Thanks for your ideas. Yea, I think I may try to install the mic on the LCD bezel near the top next to the latch possibly. I just need to figure out how to wire it so when I do ever use an external mic this new internal one woud turn off.
