if you build computer then you should know you can get processors from newegg. you just have to get a processor that goes into your laptops socket.

I would recomment you the amd athlon fx-57 though. its the best amd out there. But be sure to have some technical expertise. I am eagerly waiting for the results.

in a laptop? won't that be very, very hot, and drain battery life like hell?
Well we know for sure you can get the Athlon 64 4000+ at least which is pretty much an FX-53 which is very nice! Ordering from Newegg is rock solid, and they use fedex so no worries there. I believe the R 4000 is a socket 939 which is what you would have to look for.
I have an athlon 4000+ and I get 5 hours plus on the 12cell. Its never hot too. So i think the fx-57 will give you around 3 hours and may get a but warm like other notebooks but nothin serious.
scondly mine is a 130nm cpu while the fx-57 is 90nm so maybe the the results may remain the same.

Anyone know if I can upgrade my R4010 even though I have a sempron 3200 in it? Is there a voltage concern since the Athlon64 runs at a different voltage?

Thanks
You should be able to swap the CPUs out fine. I believe once you put in an Athlon 64 in place of the Sempron the system should default to the correct voltage settings. The CPU should already be set and supported in the system BIOS.

And i suggest we should continuously ask/beg/curse HP tech support to release a bios that understand A64 X2.

I'm drooling an X2.

Hi all, I was thinking about changing CPU too on ma R4000. I know there is a thread somewhere but I am having problem find it.
Does anyone have the link?
Thanks

Yes, only s939 AMD 64 cpus up to 4000 will work as will s939 Opterons but not the Opteron dual cores. The FX-57 might work in a R4000 and even so it would still be nutered by the lack of dual channel memory and the GPU and therefor would not be a good buy. It would also destroy battery life and would probably have heating issues. If you really want to upgrade your CPU upgrade it to something you know will work like an R4000 rather than risk a $1000 FX-57.
Well, to tell You the truth since it's not possible to raise the HTT I beleive an FX would do a better job! The core is the same of the opteron after all....

Oh, I should also mention that some of the Compaq r4000 units shipped with the Sempron may have only one fan, and a Athlon 64 has 2 so watch out, adding a Athlon 64 to a Sempron system should work but it might have cooling issues.
Well, my R4000 comes with 2 fans and to test the effectiveness of the copper heatsink I decide to unplug the main fan, the one located at the center of the laptop, so that the CPU was cooled just by the second fan!
Well, the result was impressive! Not only the 2nd fan is able to cool the system and CPU but the whole system has been Prime95 stable for 2 days while playing a DVD!!

Let me tell You, this R4000 is a f*****g true desktop replacement!!!

PS. No cooling paste was applied for the test and the laptop was placed on top of a glass table with an ambiente temperature of 21 degree celsius!!!
r4000s are awesome! I can listen to music on mine and do other light tasks (10-15% cpu load) with duct tape over the cooling fan intakes and discharges with the athlon 64 4000+ and no overheating, so it can be run fanless at low load!

with ambient temp of about 80 F

I have recently upgraded to an X2 4200+ the only issue im having is it wont register as a duel core, but it is clicking along fine at 2.2 ghz and i have installed 2 gigs of ram. working nice. i use as a dtr so im not sure about the battery drain. the biggest thing to look at on the cpu swap is the stepping code. make sure your at the right voltage. i tried a oem 4000+ san diego core first and it wont support the lower voltage. the sandiego is 1.35v and the venice is 1.5v.

Ram?

Whats the max ram this motherboard can hanndle? I'm sure its only 2gigs, I currently have 1gig ddr in the slot on the bottem of the laptop that opens up and easy to find, but where is the other slot for the ram. I would like to get 2x1gig for 2gigs total but I dont know where the **** the other slot is for the ram and I just took this bitch apart. Also is is possible to upgrade the vid card? thanks.

R4000

The max ram supported is 2gig, the additional memory slot is on the top. remove the key board and power button panel. this will get you to the wireless card also. there are no up grades to the video. I am still having good luck with mine. It will keep right up with main stream notebooks. you may also want to try a 7200 rpm hdd if battery life isn't a concern.
Yeah i was looking online and found out how to get to the ram under the keyboard and was shocked it was there. Figure I should update the wireless card also to something with a bit more range, seems like the factory one doesnt work so well with finding along longer ranges and such. Wish i could update that video card though.

Anyone have a walkthough on changing the processor? I got the 3200+ now but figure I'll try the 38 or 4000+. I was messing with the cpu earlier and it seemed to be stuck on there pretty good so didnt want to move it or anything with out checking.
