Can You Upgrade A Compaq Presario r4000 cpu? - Page 2

pull the screws out that hold the heat sink in place. It should come out fairly easy. then lift the lever that clamps the pins. the processor should be very lose then. lift it straight up do not wiggle it. keep in mind you need to get the right voltage chip. i mentioned this earlier. the mother board will not support a dual core but will function well on one. if you are thinking about using an X2 chip. the 4000's I found are not compatible.

So recommened processor upgrades are which? just the 3800+? Just wanted to get a list so I could check prices and hit this up tonight.

i would look at the 4200+ that is what i use, and it works great. it runs 2.2ghz on one of the cores. the other is just along for the ride so to speak.

seems like a bit of a waste to get a duel core to only have one work? Now on my hardware profile it says im running an amd 3400+ 498mhz, thats not saying that my processor is only doing 498 is it? if so I'll stab someone.

This is on the general tab when you go to system on your control panel says this stuff.

HP
AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 3200+
498mhz, 1.25 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Try to open some extra apps, then check the system reading again. You should see the MHz rise or even double. AMD throttles itself down at idle.

wait, so i build desktops too but i have no experience whatsoever with laptops, are you saying that my R4000 would take a normal desktop socket 939 processor?

Some of the models would - you'd need to verify the processors, read forums and trial and error.

I'm looking to resurrect my r4000, currently has a athalon 3200. Looking to upgrade to one of the x2's, does this model (laptop) vary in socket style, or is it primarily 939?

Also, does anyone have any particular experience with x2's in this system, i read the previous posts, and only said really that 4000's "don't work fully", so do the 3000's register dual core? Is there any way the duals are compatible? I plan on running win 7 ultimate, and upping to the 2 gig ram when i get it up and running again.

Thanks!

3200+ to 4000+ will be pushing it. I recommend not to

cheers ...
