RE: GUYSPLEASE HELP, NEED ADVICE ABOUT DAMAGED REFURBISHED LAPTOP

Well Guys, my eMachine m6811 finally arrived yesterday. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. To let you understand, I am British, Scottish actually, In the UK, we don¡¦t do this refurbished purchase. It¡¦s either a second hand, and you buy what you see, or it¡¦s new. It was purchased from Foto Connections in New York.

I was informed that a refurbished Laptop is one that has been in the factory and has been repaired, and when it leaves, it¡¦s as good as new. Due to the fact that the Laptop had a former owner, I was not expecting it to be in pristine condition. I expected a few scratches here and there.

What I did not expect was that it would come with the infamous crack all the way along the right hinge. The left hinge was cracked and was actually in the Fed Ex Box, so there is a big chip out of the left hinge. The left rubber support that sits on the base of the laptop was missing. The bottom of the laptop looked like it had been placed on a gravel path and rubbed; it was all scratched and has gashes in the base.
The top of the laptop where the eMachine logo is all scratched. Furthermore, where the fan vent is at the back of the laptop is bellowing out. To be honest, I think it has been dropped and that has caused the left hinge to have cracked off. There was no real protective packaging. It had two bubble wraps and a couple of Fed Ex Boxes and that was it. There was no Win XP Disk. No restore Disk. No mouse. No instruction manual, just the laptop and the charger.

I remember reading some reviews on this laptop. The all said it was very fast.
This is no different to my old company machine which is about three years old. The programs take a second or two to open. It has hung up on me on several occasions. I am not sure where I stand from a Legal point of view. I am going to forward this email to the company today and see what the say. The only thing that I can say positive is there as yet no flicker ļ I am not sure what I should have expected from a Refurbished Laptop, maybe I was expecting too much! But I would not have expected it to be in such poor condition.

To be honest guys, I could have bought a second Hand laptop here in the Middle East a lot cheaper and I would have known what I was buying. This looks like something from EBay. Is Foto Connections a second hand company that sells second Hand equipment? If you can give me any advice, I would be very very grateful and thankful. I have added a link to the page on the web where it was purchased form. The other problem that I have is it was purchased on my behalf by my colleague who is one of the manager¡¦s from my companies IT Dept. Unfortunately, most American companies won¡¦t accept British credit cards!! I have a Visa, Master Card and finally and guess what, an American Express Platinum Credit Card, isn¡¦t that ironic!!! Lol.

How can I increase the speed. I really am not sure what to do, Its bad enough that Insurgents want to stab me in the back, Let alone a company in the USA, in Newyork of all places, Very very dissapointed.

Their information regards purchasing.

Kind Regards to all at NBF.

Fraser¡K

This is what I have sent to them so far. As yet no reply, This was sent by email and one on the ticketing system.
Please can you give me a clear and precise definition of what you mean buy a refurbished laptop? What condition can I expect it to arrive in when it is delivered? Will it have the manual? Will it be scratched? Have cracks in it? No software? What legal standing do I have if it arrives in a very poor condition? What can I expect? Will it appear factory new or will it look like it has been purchased from EBay? What can I expect for around $800.00 something that looks old and second hand, or something that one would expect from a reputable dealer that is worth selling?
10th Aug: They replied that I need to contact their sales Dept¡K.

I bought my M2350 (eMachines) from Tiger Direct a couple months ago. While it did come in a "plain brown box" it contained what what appeared to be factory packing and the laptop itself appeared to be new except for one sticker to the left of the "pad" was missing. The stickers to the right of the pad were still there however. Also the battery pack and power brick/cord appeared to be brand new. The laptop itself shows a few "wear marks". I am totally satisfied with it.

They have not even bothered to reply to my emails, What a bunch of tossers.
Did you not open the package for inspection when it arrived and the refused acceptance of it? I would return it if possible. Also, if you used a Platinum Card for the purchase you may have some protection therough the card's insureance company and may be able to request a refund due to damages/destruction of the laptop.

Merlin, I did not pay for it. The company wont accept British or as they
say " International Credit Cards, What a crock of Sh*t. A credit card is made to be used abroad. My friend in IT bought it using his a he is a Yank. I gave him the cash. I did check it. The inner hardware seems to be ok. Its mostly cosmetic. I am worried about the bent bit of plastic at the the left corner where the fan is though. They have still not even replied to my email, what a Micky Mouse Out fit.

Foto Connection has a history of screwing its costumers

I'd try to get a refund. Tell your company to dispute the charges with the CC company.

For future reference, when buying from an American company check resellerratings.com first:

ETA: You can also always check with the Better Business Bureau. (www.bbb.com)

That sounds like a crappy deal....

Thanks for the heads up on Foto Connection though.
You might want to check if any original factory warranty remaining on your machine by contacting emachines, and they might be able to repair/replace your machine if Foto Connection refuses to be of any assistance. I have herd others going to emachines for assistance, and some of them have been successful.

My machine arrived in a plain brown box with no bubble wrap but it was sandwiched in between two carboard cellophane "windows" to help protect it during shipping. My machine haso had a few scrapes on it, and is missing one of the rubber " feet" on the bottom, and so far one cracked hinge .

The cosmetic damage doesn't bother me too much, the laptop closes just fine and the scrapes are hardly noticible. However if my hinge explodes I will seek warranty repair. The screen is in perfect condition with no dead pixels . I had a referb HP prior to this the screen had a few dead pixels but i couldn't return it because it didn't exceed the 5 dead pixel limit ... I am happy with the performance of this machine so far, and its nice having dedicated video ram (3d is much smoother) .

Best of luck,
James

UpdaTE ON MY eMachine M6811

James thanks for the reply, well, Foto Connections have still not replied to any of my emails. It's now about 5 days since it has been up and running.
From a cosmetic point. I got some rubbing Alcohol and cleaned the top of the lid. It actually managed to remove the scratches; they were more mild blemishes than actual cuts into the machine. The rear left foot is still missing. I am going to super glue the crack at the right hinge and will attempt to super glue the left missing hinge back. The underneath is still scratched but it can’t be seen, so no big Deal there. I have no missing pixels or screen flicker. So that’s a positive for me.
I installed System mechanic 5.5. Its a system utility for cleaning and fixing Registry ect. Since I have used it, the machine is running a lot better. The games are a lot smoother. I Installed the omega video Driver and over clocked it to GPU 367 MEM 229, that’s certainly helped. I have installed the 4:1 Via Chip set drivers. That is all the software upgrades I have done. So its going a lot better. The section at the fan does not appear to have been damaged where the missing part of the left hinge is.

James, have you any other tips for speeding it up. How much RAM can this machine take? 1,.2 or 2MB of RAM, I seem to see conflicting reports. I will change the RAM when I get home on leave to Scotland which is in 10 Days, not that I am counting. I am unsure though how or where to put my memory card form my camera? There is 2 slots at the front left of the machine, one looks like a small floppy drive. So other than that, its going a lot better, the software I can always fix as long as the hardware is ok.

Thanks for all the help Guys. Will be going on Note book forums server to play CS and BF2 when I am home, hope to see you gamers there.

If it really was a refurbished machine and not just a used (and abused) machine they were selling (sounds like the latter), It should have a 90 day warranty with emachines.

The machine will take 2GB of RAM, but it requires getting to an internal slot to get the other 1GB in it. Compman wrote us a guide that is stickied here on getting to the slot. It is also hosted on Fizi's resource portal.

What type of memory card does your camera have?

Thunder, I have a Nikon 8800 with a compact Flash Card. I am going to keep the Lappie as it seems to be running ok, I will insatll XP Home and do a fresh insatll of everything when I get back home to Scotland. Will I have to reinstall the Chip Set drivers again or will they remain as the new 4:1. I am going to upgrade the CPU to the lateset driver. Will that need to be installed as well. I am not sure how to Flash the BIOS, will look into that today. What will that do to the machine, why should I upgrade it, why is it different from the current version.

The forward slot will accept Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital , and MultiMedia Cards. The rear slot will accept Compact Flash, and MicroDrives (2.2gb CF Cards). The built in card reader does not support Smart Media or any other form factor.

The reader works great with SD cards... I havent tried out any of the other flash memory formfactors that it supports yet...

Does anyone know if the card reader will read/write to Memory Stick Pro Duo?

Anyone know whare a rubber "foot" can be found?

Frasier,

It sounds like your on the right track to squeeze out every ounce of performance that your notebook has . A suggestion would be to check and see if there are any unwanted processes running on your machine that are stealing processor cycles/memory . If you find some that you know you wont use and feel confortable manually editing your registry you can stop it from loading .

For example I like to use iTunes to import music from cds. However I don't have an iPod (instead I have a Gateway DMP-X20) so the ipodservice process(that itunes installs) is useless to me. Using the registry editor I deleted the key that started the process. You have to be careful and it would be an excellent idea to backup your reg before modifing it (regedit FILE then EXPORT. If your curious to what processes are being started by the reg each time windows starts you can always run regedit --->(Select)Hkey_local_machine ---> Software ---> Microsoft ---> windows ---> currentversion ---> run to view the keys . Trojans and Malware might hide in here too ; take note of suspicious program names, and try to find out what they are.

Where do you feel your machine is lacking in performance?

If you dicede to flash your BIOS be careful... An incorrect/bad flash (although quite rare) can effectively turn any computer into an expensive paperweight. I;ve managed to do that before on my HP laptop. Somehow I managed to erase the bios flash chip completely, without then flashing a new bios. (I didn't manually power down, and I had the machine plugged in).

I havent tried to do a fresh XP install on this m6811 yet. I just did a sloppy upgrade to XP Pro from Home. There was a few hiccups with drivers along the way. Im sure that you are going to need all sorts of drivers (for the nic, wifi, 6in1 reader, audio, modem, cpu and chipset...). I do have a copies of the stock drivers if you need them, Ill just have to find a place to host them...)

Drivers? You can get the factory drivers from Arima, or check This Post for other options.

What you might want to check is the Serial number, if it starts with an "N" that means that it was not refurbished but just resold and eMachines will not warranty it unless you have the original owners Proof of purchase. If the Serial number starts with a "R" that will tell you that the system is refurbished and you will have a 90 day warranty on it. Even if the system is OOW eMachines should be able to fix the Cracked hinge problem since it's a known issue.

Thanks for all the advice Guys, I Flashed the BIOS and it all went fine, It just seems to take time to load programs. I will install WIN XP Pro. I have just over clocked my Graphics Card on my m6811. I have it at 367 GPU 229 MEM. I have gone to 376 /323 but it shows artefact 1 on the 3D Render. I am using the latest Omega Driver. What is an Acceptable Level of Artefact/ Is 1 to much? Also, does anyone know if I can add a 1mb RAM chip on the external slot, will it work with the 256 mb internal chip? Or will I have to do both.

Guys, I get home tomorrow on Leave from the Middle East, God what a place. Why we are here, I have no idea, were invaded because of the threat of WMDs, and there is nothing here period. All we have done is open one big can of worms which will burrow its way to our shores. We should have taken out Saddam and let them fight it out ourselves. You cant change Religion with weapons, only with ideas.
Anyway enough of politics, I am leaving for 17 days of peace and normality, no worries about being shot or abducted or IEDd. I can’t wait to be at home with my pregnant wife, see my Mum, and other siblings, I can’t wait to get Plugged into my 1MB Pipe and get some serious online Gaming done, as well as working on my New House. My God, I must have been so homesick, look at the Dribble I have written.
I will give you all an update when I get the new install done. Latter Guys, Going to Pack for tonight’s Red eye Flight, at least I will Business Class, My First Real Beer in 4 months. Not that I am excited about going home to Scotland. NOT.

Latter All. Thanks again.

Reserviour Dog That’s my Game Spy ID, add me onto your Buddy List if you use it. The Spelling of Reserviour Dog is correct.

Latter All..

No, we should have spent the money perfecting synthetic fuels and hydrogen power. Then we could let those people drink their oil and go back to beating each other senseless with sticks. GW is a fool and a liar, and we'll suffer for his stupidity for generations.

My serial # starts with an N but was claimed to be refurbished...

It looks more like a Best Buy display though (there is a yellow license plate on the bottom of the lappy). I was able to get an RMA for my cracking hinge (with out having proof of being original owner) and will be sending out my lappy for replair shortly.

Reserviour Dog

You might want to try and see if you can get an RMA for at least the cracking hinge. Emachines/Gateway/Arima may repair/replace the rest of the case for a fee.

Any news from the tossers at Foto Connection yet?
