What kind of work are you going to be doing in school?

Well I like the Acer Ferrari, I like the AMD chip the X700 graphics card plus it looks cool.

The IBM is sturdy but its boring and middle of the road. If your a business student you might like this one.

Yeah I'm a business student and I like the acer ferrari too. I don't think at school i'll probably just be doing powerpoints, excels, word processing, but I like gaming too and I'll probably be watching movies on it too when I'm come back home every month and its about a 2 hour ride. I know the IBM will be reliable and the acer has half the memory and slower processor.

You can always upgrade the memory and you dont sound like you need the most powerfull CPU. The one thing the IBM has going for it is they are pretty rugged.

I think if you are a person that can take care of electronics then the Acer is a better choice.

How are Acer's from a durability standpoint? Is the 3 year warranty needed?
I hear they are pretty durable its the service that gets the low marks.

If you can afford the 3 year plan then it cant hurt to have it.

I know this is probably a stupid question but I'm going to buy this laptop online and not directly from acer and the site does mentions but does not offer he warranty. Can I buy the warranty seperately?

Yeh you can, thats what i did. Once you get it, you have to activate it on the Acer Advantage website. Ive got the Ferrari 4005 and they are great.

Okay, how's the carbon fibre, does it scratch easily?
I like the IBM. You can't beat the quality, and the x300 will be fine for casual gaming.
carbon fibre doesn't scatch easily.

I would pick the IBM. My friend had an acer and it wasn't that reliable at times.

IBM - reliable, powerful, watch movies or watever is fine. Not sure about gaming since i don't game.

Also, i think the chances of having your ferrari stolen is higher than an ugly ol' IBM

Yeah I was worried about the ferrari getting stolen if I got it but it just looks so good compared to the IBM. I don't want to get something just because it looks good. I keep changing my mind about what I want to get. The IBM has a slightly faster processor, double the memory, smaller harddrive, no dvd burner but its got reliability and durability. The Acer has a better videocard, bigger hardrive, dvd burner and looks great but unsure about the reliability and whether it can last 4 years. Both are roughly the same price so its a tough choice for me.

If you can afford to, go with the Ferrari 4005 instead of the 4002.

I can't afford to do that I'm looking to spend 2000 dollars max. Is there a big difference between the two? or anything I should now thats bad about the Ferrari 4002?

Where are you buying the Acer 4002? That's not available in the U.S. is it?
What kind of games?

As it stands, I would recommend the IBM for the RAM amount and processor power because it does not seem like gaming is a main objective.

The Thinkpad will also have better battery life.

Yeah I'm from Canada so its available one certain canadian websites...if you go to www.acer.ca you can find places to buy it. Most games I'll probably play are like NHL and Star Wars Battlefront 2 when it comes out.

whats 200 bucks between a better gpu, double the ram, and a faster cpu....

the 4005 is a great investment.... plus it is more future proof due to the 64 bit processor.

im looking for a new laptop too and the 4005 is pretty much the one i am going to buy... the only thing i am worried about is theft and their lack of service... we shall see.

up here in canada the 4005 goes for about 2,500 plus we have a 15% tax on everything so thats another 375 dollars so thats close to 3000 dollars so if i were to get a ferrari I'd have to settle on the 4002...So the IBM or the Ferrari?
