Need advice on purchasing a mac laptop

Here's my story:

I've been a Wintel user for over 15 years but my workplace is asking me to become knowledgeable about macs, especially in it's installation, maintenance, upgrades and quirks.

I've decided I've gotten as much book learning as I can handle and now I need a mac to do some hands-on work. I'll mostly be compatibility testing the latest OS X updates and software releases plus the occasional experimenting on active directory network connectivity. I won't be doing extensive photo-editing

I've decided I want to get a used 12" powerbook or ibook because I'm a contractor and I'll need to lug it around wherever I go (in addition to my wintel machine).

My budget: $500-$600 US.

I'll need the following:
G3 or G4 processor
256MB ram minimum
20GB HD min.
DVD-ROM drive (or a combo drive)
Fast Ethernet
Airport (or AP extreme)
USB
Firewire

Must be capable of running Tiger

Preferable: ease in hardware upgrading

Questions:

1. Do you guys think the above configuration is adequate for what I need to do? If not please let me know.

2. Does my minimum hardware requirement listed above sound reasonable for the budget I've made?

3. Can anyone recommend any reputable used mac dealers that won't try to rip me off? Please understand I won't be buying from ebay or other auction sites. (I would definitely consider offers in my local area if someone has one for sale.)

4. Are there any certification exams for mac technicians or service engineers or anything like that? My boss is a certification freak and wasn't very helpful in pointing me in any particular direction.

Thanks for any advice you guys may have for me. Hopefully I can turn it around some day and help you guys with tech support.

try craiglist.org to buy old G3 models. They're often around $600-700 canadian. some are cheaper than others.

as for the specs, i'm not sure

but from what i gather, the G3 can barely run tigers (again, i'm not too sure^^)

Since airport is not included with G3 ibooks, i dont think u can buy one at $600 because the cards themselves cost $90~.

If you're going to pay that much for a used one you might as well go ahead and buy a new one.

Actually I was considering that, but the cheapest new mac laptop is at around $1000 US. Although it will have a G4, it's also about double my budget. I can do without the Airport I guess.

correction, the cheapest new mac laptop is $799. amazon has the "old" 1.2Ghz 12" machines for $899 + $100 rebate. so in the end, it should be $799 flat due to free shipping and likely no taxes. yes, they are an authorized apple reseller.

Why not look on eBay? I'm not sure what your views are, but you can get brand new G4 Powerbooks for $500+, depending on whether or not you run into any good deals. Plus, half of them seem to be unopened...

those kinds of prices tend to be for systems early on in an auction. i just checked one out...was an 867mhz G4 w/ a bid for $510 and still a day to go in bidding. it'll likely go for ~$800 or so. even on ebay the Macs tend to have a pretty high resale value when compared to other computers. the best price i have seen for a new (slightly used but still under warranty) PB was ~$1250 (w/ academic pricing around $1350), so yes a savings, but not as it might be for other brand PCs.

then again, i'm sure we're all open to some links to some sweet auctions if u bump into them.
